Our students know the world is small. How does our instruction help them interact with and add value to the world?

A similar bill was introduced in the U.S. (SB 1291) but (unsurprisingly) stalled in committee.

We tried this. It actually didn’t work. We need a whole new system of accountability. The system just isn’t working this way

My talk today illustrated how Ts aren’t using inquiry to connect and contribute to communities. Maybe we begin to redesign how we talk about inquiry?

#CUFA2024 has been wonderful so far! One thing I keep seeing/hearing is about the quantitative disconnect between historical thinking and civic action. We MUST consider how the field is creating this reality for Ss and Ts.

I’m actually giving a talk about this tomorrow, arguing that authentic assessment might not actually prepare students for career readiness like we think it does. I love authentic assessment but it needs to be tied to an understanding of knowledge work practices

I don’t disagree. I think there might be a distinction though between “trashy reads” and “reading” on social media (which youth say they do most often). While we might not want to genre-shame, we need to look at the type (fun, analysis), range (genres), and length of text.

Hey, social studies friends! If you'll be attending #NCSS2024 in Boston next weekend, I hope you'll consider dropping into the #sschat unconference in Room 200. It starts at 9:45am Saturday morning and goes until 11:15. No obligation to stay the whole time. The topics are decided on by attendees.

Maybe… but students seem to be struggling with sustained reading. That we are seeing the same in adults too (those who used to read a lot) is also telling. I think it is pointing to social factors, not just changes in student preference

What a great article and especially useful for teaching the false dichotomies between democracy and dictatorship. Our students and world need more nuanced understandings about government and political systems

I know it is early and institutions are slow to change, but it has been nice to chat with folks here rather than view a ton of performative posts by institutions and companies. It feels more like social media rather than a social platform

With college admissions offices divorced from university faculty discussions about curriculum, I don’t see the demand for the current AP model changing either

Honored to run with my daughter at the NJ Girls on the Run 5k this morning. Thank you to all of the coaches for bringing such a diversity group of girls together to learn about themselves, become friends and get fit together

@merriam-webster.com is an absolute gift. Was just teaching the importance of etymology for literacy instruction and then they shared this. Just beautiful

1) knowledge work as a construct for planning and evaluating a curriculum of engagement
2) the impact of Dutch reform language in early US documents

I’ve been thinking a lot about how knowledge work intersects with powerful knowledge. As a tangential reminder, industrial-style work management does not always support knowledge work
