California leads in nuclear innovation and talent. It should lead in deployment, too—delivering affordable, clean, reliable power at home, rather than exporting this expertise elsewhere.

Countries like France and Sweden have reduced emissions while maintaining affordability by combining nuclear with other clean sources.

Research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology finds that including nuclear in a low-carbon grid significantly lowers system costs compared with relying solely on renewables and storage. The International Energy Agency reports similar results.

Diablo Canyon Power Plant provides 9% of California’s electricity and 17% of its clean power. The state nearly shut it down before extending operations to 2030, reversing course due to the power shortages and blackouts its absence would create.

California faces soaring electricity prices and surging demand, with households paying nearly double the national average for energy. Yet the state still blocks new nuclear development under a 1976 moratorium. It’s time to revisit that decision.

The plan targets having 70% of France’s energy consumption to come from decarbonized electricity by 2035, compared to about 60% today that still relies on fossil fuels. The PPE also boosts nuclear power targets by 5% through 2035, while trimming wind and solar goals by roughly 20%.

Nuclear, solar, and wind are far safer than any fossil fuel, and nearly four orders of magnitude safer than coal. What’s not to love?

Here’s to a safe, clean energy Valentine’s Day. 💖⚛️

4. It’s Safe

According to Our World in Data, nuclear energy is one of the safest sources of electricity when measuring deaths by terawatt hour, ranking just behind solar and even safer than wind.

13.02.2026 20:09 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0

Furthermore, a 1,000-megawatt nuclear plant needs just over a square mile of land, while wind requires about 360 times more area and solar up to 75 times more area to generate the same amount of energy. Nuclear gets it done with less.

3. It’s Powerful

One uranium pellet, about the size of a gummy bear, holds the same energy potential as 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 149 gallons of oil, or one ton of coal.
