This renewed partnership aims to enhance cooperation in technology and innovation, specifically targeting AI, supercomputing, and semiconductors with plans to jointly host a renewable energy summit. Both countries seek greater economic and energy security amidst geopolitical uncertainty.
India and Canada are working to mend diplomatic relations as Prime Ministers Narendra Modi and Mark Carney announce a 10-year civil nuclear energy deal, including long-term uranium supply and collaboration on small modular and advanced reactors.
Embracing modern nuclear technology could help California lower emissions, stabilize the grid, and control costs as electricity demand rises—positioning nuclear energy as a key component of a more balanced and reliable clean energy strategy.
California ultimately extended operations at Diablo Canyon Power Plant through 2030 after recognizing its importance for reliability and emissions goals.
The proposal marks a notable shift in a state that restricted nuclear development even before the Three Mile Island accident and later closed plants such as San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station, leading to an increase in emissions.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers has introduced legislation to exempt reactors approved by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission since 2005 from the state’s 1976 moratorium, including modern designs such as the AP1000 used at Vogtle Electric Generating Plant.
California, long known for high electricity prices and grid reliability challenges, may be reconsidering its decades-old ban on new nuclear power plants.

With Russia currently dominating global HALEU supply and U.S. demand projected to surge by 2035, the investment marks a major step toward rebuilding America’s nuclear fuel supply chain and reducing long-term supply risks.

The funding will support expanded production of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) and low-enriched uranium (LEU) — critical fuels for today’s reactors and next-generation small modular reactors.
The U.S. Department of Energy has awarded $900 million each to American Centrifuge Operating (a Centrus subsidiary), General Matter, and Orano Federal Services to strengthen domestic uranium enrichment capacity.

California leads in nuclear innovation and talent. It should lead in deployment, too—delivering affordable, clean, reliable power at home, rather than exporting this expertise elsewhere.
Countries like France and Sweden have reduced emissions while maintaining affordability by combining nuclear with other clean sources.
Research from Massachusetts Institute of Technology finds that including nuclear in a low-carbon grid significantly lowers system costs compared with relying solely on renewables and storage. The International Energy Agency reports similar results.
Diablo Canyon Power Plant provides 9% of California’s electricity and 17% of its clean power. The state nearly shut it down before extending operations to 2030, reversing course due to the power shortages and blackouts its absence would create.
California faces soaring electricity prices and surging demand, with households paying nearly double the national average for energy. Yet the state still blocks new nuclear development under a 1976 moratorium. It’s time to revisit that decision.

The plan targets having 70% of France’s energy consumption to come from decarbonized electricity by 2035, compared to about 60% today that still relies on fossil fuels. The PPE also boosts nuclear power targets by 5% through 2035, while trimming wind and solar goals by roughly 20%.
Finance Minister Roland Lescure said the government will soon release an electrification plan to accelerate the shift away from fossil fuels, with a goal of reaching 585 TWh of decarbonized electricity by 2030.
France is aiming to increase electricity production from nuclear and renewables by 20% over the next decade under its newly published energy planning law (PPE).
Nuclear, solar, and wind are far safer than any fossil fuel, and nearly four orders of magnitude safer than coal. What’s not to love?
Here’s to a safe, clean energy Valentine’s Day. 💖⚛️
4. It’s Safe
According to Our World in Data, nuclear energy is one of the safest sources of electricity when measuring deaths by terawatt hour, ranking just behind solar and even safer than wind.
Furthermore, a 1,000-megawatt nuclear plant needs just over a square mile of land, while wind requires about 360 times more area and solar up to 75 times more area to generate the same amount of energy. Nuclear gets it done with less.
3. It’s Powerful
One uranium pellet, about the size of a gummy bear, holds the same energy potential as 17,000 cubic feet of natural gas, 149 gallons of oil, or one ton of coal.
