I disagree, I like a lot of their stuff even if I don’t always agree with it. The tone of this was mealy mouthed and the argument sloppily constructed in a way that I found pretty surprising.
But it’s your responsibility as a writer (and one whose work I generally respect) to be concerned about careless readers and to ensure your argument is clear and airtight. And if you’re telling me your argument isn’t “Judaism enabled Epstein,” then it failed in that respect.
This actually perfectly articulates my issue with that piece: despite what TikTok would have you believe, Just Asking Questions is not a legitimate form of academic inquiry, esp when it applies to specific ethnic/racial groups in which case you just sound like Alex Jones ranting about frog assholes

I don’t disagree that Epstein and his relationship to Jewishness are not a valid path of inquiry, and I thought the point you made about how recognizable some of his language is for American Jews was a really good one. But some of the implications being made here are bizarre at best
Yes and then you immediately undercut the point you make in the first SG by talking about how Epstein used the “banal markers of Jewishness” of “ordinary Jews” for his “pernicious ends.” Surely you see how that’s going to be read by careless readers (which you know as well as I do are most readers)
Why is it bizarre? And why is it disingenuous? Klion’s piece doesn’t talk about Israel either. Jews are not synonymous with Israel, as much as perhaps people like you would like us to be.
I happen to agree with him generally (as I do Jewish currents generally) — the claims that antizionism = antisemitism are bullshit and the Epstein-induced antisemitism is far more real and way scarier. But I don’t get why you have to deny that antisemitism *exists* full stop to make that point lol

I had never heard the term before this piece. It’s a really interesting idea. I absolutely agree that’s what Epstein was doing to some of the ppl in his circle. The emails support that for sure. But yeah, not specific to Jews, and certainly not specific to wealthy Jews!
For me, it’s not even that this argument from a Jewish publication will reinforce antisemites’ views about Jewish people (tho it def could). It’s that it’s a bad argument. Clannishness is EVERYWHERE. tribalism is EVERYWHERE. it was just one of many, many tools Epstein used to maintain his own power
But focusing on the Jew angle is just so myopic. Of course he had a lot of friends who were wealthy powerful Jews (he was a wealthy powerful Jew). Of course he appealed to people’s Jewishness to get what he wanted (he was a psychopath). But Jewishness is obviously not what enabled Epstein. Power is.
