Topic-RAG for historical newspapers: Enhancing information retrieval in humanities research through topic-based retrieval-augmented generation | Computational Humanities Research | Cambridge Core Topic-RAG for historical newspapers: Enhancing information retrieval in humanities research through topic-based retrieval-augmented generation - Volume 1

Topic-RAG allows historians (and humanities scholars broadly) to search, say, old newspaper, not only for keywords, but for abstract concepts like ‘greed’ or ‘fear’ by organisering sources in thematic clusters.

AI and the humanities: Across the Princeton campus, an era of collaboration is underway. Princeton has firmly established its presence at the forefront of AI research — including transformative work in humanities scholarship.

Sure hope Princeton succeeds in letting humanities shape the trajectory of AI - and not only engages reactively by using it to collect, sort and analyze historical sources.

My friend and colleague @benjamin-asmussen.bsky.social is using the latest AI-tools to organize vast amounts of historical data. The next step is to deploy an army of AI-agents — small assistant bots — to crawl global sources and archives, blindly obeying the historian’s command.
Will it backfire?

I acknowledged the risks - but it should done anyway. If you consider the deliberately addictive technology.

👏🏻The real question isn’t whether AI can “accelerate” the humanities.

It’s whether the humanities will shape the assumptions embedded in AI.
