I randomly brought up the war in Iraq last week in my βThe Unreliable Narrator in Latinx literatureβ class as we were discussing political rhetoric. Today in class I was suddenly reminded and told them so that I was their age, sitting in my undergrad courses, as we started that illegitimate war.
Caught the screening of Latinx sci-fi classic Sleep Dealer and q & a with the director Alex Rivera at the Cheech Museum. So grateful to have such amazing institutions and events in Riverside.
It amuses me to no end that many of the shadiest characters in TomΓ‘s Riveraβs . . . And the Earth Did Not Devour Him, a narrative that traces migrant farm workersβ journeys from South Texas all the way to Minnesota, are from San Antonio (my hometown).
If you see 'ICE OUT' towels at the Super Bowl, they came from a coalition of artists, musicians and community organizers who handed out more than 25,000 towels protesting the actions of ICE.
ICE has grabbed so many people from their vehicles that there are abandoned cars across Minnesota.
This tow truck driver returns the cars for free as a public service, and heβs been getting death threats.
They hate the helpers.
Which is why must keep helping.
Many of the schools in Houston Texas walked out this afternoon to protest against ICE.
When one student was asked if he was afraid of being marked absent or suspended his response was βif thatβs what it takes to protect people and use my first amendment rights, Iβm ok with thatβ.
Be like these kids!
Teaching it this quarter again in a creative nonfiction course. Students always love it!
". . . . that there are more than a dozen secret and obscure watchlists that homeland security and the FBI are using to track protesters (both anti-ICE and pro-Palestinian), βAntifa,β and others who are promiscuously labeled βdomestic terrorists.β" www.kenklippenstein.com/p/ices-secre...
There's a prison revolt at a concentration camp in Texas in solidarity with Minneapolis:
This is Liam Ramos. The five year old that ICE took from a Minneapolis school and sent BY HIMSELF WITHOUT HIS FAMILY to a detention facility in Texas. There are monsters among us and they are wearing masks, carrying guns, and work for the US government.
Senate Democrats absolutely have to shut the govt down to stop this ICE insanity in the Twin Cities. This is not sustainable & cannot be normalized. Any Democratic vote to provide money to the thugs who are brutalizing this community is a grave betrayal to the people here. Accountability can't wait.
Blows my mind that some of the same journalists who see Trump as a want-to-be dictator at home are earnestly discussing the "challenges" for this same man to "bring democracy" to a country it just illegal invaded. Please grow up.
I somehowβfoolishly, I admitβhavenβt thought much about the importance of representation in my class on erΕs in the Western philosophical tradition, but seeing their faces light up when I brought up Juan Gabriel reminded me of the magic of seeing someone like yourself at the head of the classroom.
We are excited to have this out! Please consider submitting and sharing the call! π
Such a great point. Iβm in San Antonio TX & community members have made this directory of mutual aids & resources for the city & surrounding areas. docs.google.com/spreadsheets...
Thereβs is also this one that was created for TX (just not sure how up to date it is) docs.google.com/document/d/1...
True Life: My Dog is a NIMBY
With literally minutes left in his presidency, Joe Biden has granted clemency to Leonard Peltier
Omg, heβs adorable! Him and Archie need to meet.
Realized as the words were coming out of my mouth, how Carmen Maria Machadoβs In the Dream, which Iβve taught a few times before, conveys the ways in which domestic violence is sustained through fantasy, perverting the uses of narrative and thus of world building. This is what I love about teaching.
Thanks for sharing more names to this starter pack. There are now 123 or so scholars who work on Latina/o/x studies included in this list. Please share and also send also send more recommendations of folks to include! Β‘Entre mΓ‘s mejor!

Iβm thinking through βpleasurable violenceβ in one context and through apocalyptic Latinx lit in a completely different context. So, Iβm really looking forward to this.
The student newspaper at Ohio State (my alma mater and the paper were I began my career) confirms the men atop the student union in the viral photo were indeed ARMED SNIPERS from the State Highway Patrol, with loaded weapons trained on STUDENTS below.
Too long for alt text here's a summary: faculty members at UT Austin are condemning the university administration's decision to invite heavily armed city police and state troopers to the campus in response to a planned peaceful educational event by the Palestine Solidarity Committee. The event was meant to include teach-ins, study sessions, pizza, and an art workshop, with no threat of violence or disruption. The faculty members witnessed police using excessive force against students, including punching a female student, knocking over a legal observer, and violently arresting students for standing at the front of the crowd. They are calling for no business as usual on campus and are urging the community to gather at the main mall in front of UT Tower the following day.

Still reeling from seeing Hania Rani live in LA this weekend: her music has helped me get through the pandemic and through so, so much writing.
