It was a privilege to give evidence on #economicabuse at @scotparl.bsky.social. What an honour to represent all of the incredible women who have shared their experiences with me to help raise awareness & demand change.

Huge thank you to Foysol Choudhury MBE MSP for helping us at Scottish Women's Aid to raise awareness of #domesticabuse in #Scotland.
Foysol reminds everyone that just because #16DaysofAction is over, domestic abuse is a year-round issue that requires urgent action.

Alongside global partners, I want to see action taken to secure womenβs rights across political, economic & social spheres once & for all.
#CSW69 #UNWomen #ViolenceAgainstWomen #ForwardsNotBackwards #GenderEquality #WomensRights
In fact, we are going backward. We only need to look to the US to see hard-fought progress being reversed. This yearβs CSW theme is βFor All Women and Girls β Equality. Rights. Empowerment", and it couldn't be more timely. πͺ
It's been 30 years since the landmark Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action to achieve gender equality and secure the rights of women & girls. βοΈ
Despite some progress over the last 3 decades, we are still decades away from achieving gender equality. βοΈ
βGreat news! We have a joint mortgage.β
That one text changed everything for Sarah. What followed was years of economic abuse, a gruelling legal battle, and a fight to regain control of her home and finances.

It's great to raise awareness of this important topic, but it must be caveated by highlighting the associated risks. Not everyone has the autonomy to act on this advice safely. (3/3)
The advice on how to protect yourself doesn't take into consideration the victim's ability, freedom & space to take these actions. Opening a separate bank account, making copies of important documents, contacting #domesticviolence support centres can all increase your risk of danger. (2/3)
Pleased to see this article by MSN on the '3 Signs You're Experiencing Financial Abuse' to raise awareness of #financialabuse.
However, the article fails to mention the dangers associated with financial abuse and the fact that it coincides with other forms of abuse. (1/3)

Support workers & researchers have long highlighted that abusive (ex)partners use the tax system to exploit victim-survivors. No person should be held responsible for their (ex) partner's tax debt. This case is from Australia, but it could just as easily be from the UK.

Life insurance can be used as a tool to control a partner during and after a relationship. Great to see the Personal Finance Society produce a good practice guide for their advisors about economic abuse and life insurance. #economicabuse #lifeinsurance

Learn more about the crimes of prolific romance fraudster Christopher Harkins in the latest episode of Disclosure - featuring expert commentary from @jennski27.bsky.social πΊ
[2/3] The fact that multiple women reported Harkins' manipulative and controlling behaviour, only to feel "dismissed" is deeply concerning. This highlights the need for comprehensive training and awareness within our police forces to identify & respond effectively to all forms of domestic abuse.
[1/3] Christopher Harkins' actions and the subsequent police response highlight a critical need for society, including law enforcement, to recognise and address economic abuse as a serious form of domestic abuse.
Huge thank you to #BBCScotland for interviewing me about #financialabuse in the conviction of Christopher Harkins.
The documentary will air tonight at 8pm on BBC Scotland & is already available on iPlayer.
For radio contribution, listen here starting at 2hr 41min.

1 month to go for this call for views on the costs of leaving an abusive partner!
Too many people still ask, 'why doesn't she just leave' & finances are a crucial part of that answer. If you have experienced #domesticabuse or support those who have, we need to hear from you.

It's wonderful to see more #research on #economicabuse being done. This thesis explores young women's experiences of #economicabuse, which we desperately need to help us understand how to address & prevent this form of abuse.

Please do consider responding to this inquiry so we can shine a spotlight on the finances and resources required to leave and the risks associated with this process.

Really important inquiry by the #ScottishParliament about the financial considerations when leaving an abusive partner. I know I, and many of the women I interviewed, have been waiting for an opportunity to highlight 'the costs of leaving' & the #economicabuse they've experienced. (1/3)
Brilliant job opportunities at the amazing @opfs.bsky.social
Do check them out π
Thanks, @Camille! Have you seen any? I'm just wondering what one looks like, so that I can give it a go!
Fellow PhD people, have any of you written an executive summary of your thesis? Appreciate not everyone/every profession wants to or has time to read 350 pages.
Thanks!

Proposed rulemaking such as that by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in the #UnitedStates is very welcome.
"Issue of 'coerced debt' warrants rulemaking activity with the expectation that abuse survivors will experience significant increases to their credit scores."
shorturl.at/k1Xi4
It's time we recognise coerced debt for what it is & stop the devastating impact it has on victims & their children. Currently, there is no economic justice for victims & recognition of coerced debt by relevant bodies is inconsistent at best.
This year is the year of 'coerced debt' for me.
#CoercedDebt is debt that was taken out in ur name, without ur consent or knowledge, and/or u were forced, coerced/threatened into taking out. It's a common & devastating outcome of #economicabuse which up to 99% of #domesticabuse victims experience.
Hello 2025! First day back to work and desperately trying to remember who I am and what I do for a living. Hope everyone had a relaxing time off and is ready to fight for #womensrights in 2025.

Issues with #childcare keep getting raised by women's organisations across #Scotland. Women are still disproportionately responsible for the care of children & this has significant implications for women's economic equality. If we want #genderequality then a new plan for childcare is essential.
