hey man, I hope you keep going. I hope you find some kind of thing to latch onto if you need that, to hang onto. I hope you stick around to find it. Do what you've got to do, but please, stick around in this world. do not let anyone else win. you're worth it. I promise you are, bro.

Feed algorithms are widely suspected to influence political attitudes. However, previous evidence from switching off the algorithm on Meta platforms found no political effects'. Here we present results from a 2023 field experiment on Elon Musk's platform X shedding light on this puzzle. We assigned active US-based users randomly to either an algorithmic or a chronological feed for 7 weeks, measuring political attitudes and online behaviour. Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects.
Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users' feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X's algorithm has persistent effects on users' current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.

A new paper shows that less than 2 months of exposure to Twitter’s algorithmic feed significantly shifts people’s political views to the right.

Moving from chronological feed to the algorithmic feed also increases engagement.

This is one of the most concerning papers I’ve read in awhile.

One of my favorite feelings in life is to be completely lost when trying to learn something new and then suddenly you feel it all lock into place when you realise you understand more than you don't. All those connections being made in the background. Feels amazing.

I hate how I can't describe this game to friends.

No, it's not like Fire Emblem. No, it's not like FFT. No, it's not an ogre-like. No, it's like Disgaea. No, not like Phantasy Star.

It's Shining Force. And it's practically perfect.

I think one thing I've noticed about why social media makes me particularly miserable more recently is that I can't parse the emotion or intention behind posts anymore. Nothing seems sincere and people use the same words in both positive and negative ways. It's just such an incomprehensible mess!

I became Senior VP at a multi-million dollar company at age 26. My salary was $600k. This was in 2018.
How did I do it?

Blacked out lines

CEO (my dad) promoted me to SVP.
There are no gimmicks. There are no shortcuts.

getting into Ridge Racer has helped me to understand the core appeal of arcade-style racers and why it's sad when the market is underserved

they're for people who like the sense of speed, enjoy improving at challenges of execution over time, and - crucially - do not actually give a shit about cars

As I mature more in age, I am realizing more and more that the characters in TMNT (comics, cartoons, games, etc) demonstrate healthy, non-toxic, non-overly-masculine, human-driven models of productive relationships.

Everyone's journey is valid. Either support them or get out of their way.

Two characters of happiness

This list could be hundreds of characters long but these were the first two I found on my phone.

Across all TMNT iterations, April and Casey are rad for being a good support network for the boys and Splinter as well as being capable in their own right.

people used to try and separate "interactive multimedia art" from "videogames" in an attempt to divide what the game industry valued from what a lot of artists wanted to be associated with. but that divide was imaginary. it's a smart thing to call everything "videogames" and force that confrontation
