Reminds me of that pillow shading filter people used to put on their art a while back and call it "low poly". even though these were 2D art pieces with no polygons or anything that implied polygons.
no shade on the artists, the filter was kinda neat actually, but it annoyed me a lil as a 3D artist

Most PS2 character models have at least QUADRUPLE the polygon count of PS1 character models. It's a seriously huge difference.
I've never heard them used interchangeably myself but it's wild how people might actually think that.
