My GGF saw service here so I was delighted to visit and walk some of The Bluff last year. It’s well worth a visit. Some very good information boards too.

Ypres: A Walk on TheΒ Bluff Step onto the Western Front in Flanders as we explore the area near to Ypres known as The Bluff. In this episode we uncover the story of the fighting here in February-March 1916, when British and German forces struggled for control of the high ground overlooking Ypres. Using contemporary accounts and battlefield evidence, we explain why this small rise in the landscape mattered so much and how the battle unfolded.

In this episode, we explore the history of The Bluff, near Ypres. We look at the bitter fighting of February–March 1916, when British and German forces battled for control of the high ground overlooking Ypres, and walk the battlefield visiting the battlefield cemeteries.

The Battle of Verdun was this man's idea. His thoughts were to cause maximum casulties to the French who would desperately defend the city, whilst minimising the German losses. It was not to work out that way.

110 years ago, today, began the longest battle of the Great War: Verdun.

It would rage until December, by which time it would claim c.750,000 casualties.
