I remember when the Crash ride was a race. 1st year was awesome, 2nd way too many people, 3rd when it became a ride was still cool.
Not many chances to ride East to West with minimal traffic in LA.

Ya got me. But there are always people who will do it. If you get an e-roadie that looks like a regular bike, I won't tell anyone.

And yes, I know the UVC are just guidelines, that have been adopted in whole or in part by every state in the Union. And yes, I know that every state has made their own modifications. Why do you seem to assume I have no idea what I'm talking about, when I have clearly demonstrated otherwise?
I believe I addressed that way, way up there by saying "virtually every state." Your state may be the rare exception. Yay for you. However, that does not make it untrue for California, which I was writing about, and which has such a law on the books. Nor for most other states.

Are you sure about that? The Uniform Vehicle Code, which forms the basis for traffic regulations in every state in the Union, specifically profits opening a car door unless it is reasonably safe to do without interfering with other traffic.

Actually, virtually every state has the same law. And no, that is not a legal exception.
Drivers should always open their door with the opposite hand. But there have been enough attempts to encourage it that it's pretty clear most drivers won't. The best solution seems to be requiring warning systems in motor vehicles to prevent opening the door if anyone is in the door zone.
Not true. California law requires that drivers only open their door when it is safe to do so, without interfering with any other traffic. Because of that, unless there is evidence that the bike rider was breaking the law, which he was not in this case, the driver is always at fault for dooring.

You'd think with such a dominant car culture and the prevalence of parallel parking, people here would look before they throw their doors open. But they don't. Not even when other cars are coming. It's wild!
Drivers don't like it when we ride 5 ft from cars to avoid the doorzone, but then we are blamed if they hit us with a door.
I wanna live there.
I almost got doored in WeHo & the driver laughed at me as they still got out of their car. π«©
