If that programmer had outsourced the code to the answer-shaped object machine, they now have no mental model to refresh.

The code was *literally* written by someone else. All their code is code someone else wrote. There is no pre-existing mental model to refresh *when* it has to be maintained.

Another thing Fred Brooks pointed out, half a century ago, is that a software design mistake that is easy and cheap to fix early, becomes more and more and more awful as time goes on.

Catching shitty designs early can save *shit tons* of time and effort.
