I also am best friends with scope creep, the best thing I've found is to create a bare-minimum list and try to prioritize that (with a little scope creep sprinkled in for interest). That being said, it's still insanely hard 😭

I'd recommend them over Root as Root takes a lot of personal data as clarified in their privacy policy, including voice calls

Stoat has clarified they don't use gen AI anymore - it seems like the dev played with it for a small thing or two but decided against it. There's a disclosure on their GitHub discussions board

Is this not a good option for a breaking point? Bluesky worked because people were willing to try - I think now is the time to explore apps outside of discord. Using other options will give them the attention they need to actually become good platforms

My groups are talking about Stoat as an option, it looks possibly okay! Their servers are overloaded right now tho

I haven't seen people talk about it much so this was my first time seeing that kind of response. Any social platform already has complicated moderation, and I fail to see the difference with DMs.

I'm with you. I've seen DMs work well in other VR platforms, and found they actually encourage interaction as people know they're wanted or what they're getting into. There are many times I have friends on orange in VRChat and I don't want to be invasive by requesting an invite.
