Trump's assholery has killed a wonderful advanced X-ray astronomical mission that has been in development for almost a decade.

Every day, amongst the dissociation & surreal mess…
…I am reminded of Terry Pratchett’s “Moving Pictures”:
“Why is it all Mr Dibbler’s films are set against the background of a world gone mad?’ said the dwarf. Soll’s eyes narrowed. ‘Because Mr Dibbler,’ he growled, ‘is a very observant man.’”

Screenshot of the ESA Juice progress bar showing 35% completion rate.
A white, glowing egg-shaped object lies in the centre of the black-and-white image, on a dark, starry background. Glowing streaks spread upwards from the object. In the top left, a yellow arrow marked ‘Sun’ points straight down, and a blue arrow marked ‘Velocity’ points towards the 7 o’clock direction. In the bottom left, an inset shows the same object on a lighter grey starry background, filled with ragged-edged, concentric egg shapes gradiented black-to-white.
🧃 Juice update!
👩💻 Science teams are busy analysing the 3I/ATLAS data received from five Juice science instruments ☄️
They're also looking forward to a star occultation by Jupiter’s moon Kallichore on 18 March, which could refine its known position – valuable data for a possible 2031 flyby.

Let there be as much outrage from politicians in Washington when kids go hungry as there is when I break bread with New Yorkers.

That's why there should be 26-episode seasons again. The suspense, the intrigue. No one knows what will happen!
[Holds facial expression for a moment, then breaks down sobbing and walks away disconsolately.]

of “Alien,” and the best I can manage is:
a) the mystique / lack of understanding of the creatures in the first “Alien” feels more essential to its cosmic horror roots. More can be lost from overexposure.
b) again, these movies just kinda tend to work better. 🤷🏻♂️

7. Excepting “The Predator,” it impresses me how successful this series is, and how the most recent three carry their own interests and attitude despite coming from the same brain trust. I tried to reflect on why the loss of mystique for the Predators bothers me less than the similar lore sprawl…

6. Plays as a sibling to “Prey,” with its hero another aggressive youth gunning for the maturation rite of hunting. Midthunder’s society was less toxic, but in both cases the heroes deal with the ol issue of what I think I want / what I actually need. (It’s an old dynamic because it fucking works.)

Okay, seven things:
1. Trachtenberg and Aison are a great storytelling team. When it comes to the fundamentals of classical narrative in genre, they are REALLY hard to beat atm. (OK, the character beats are maybe a LITTLE too underlined in a scene with Thia’s sister.)

Anti-ICE Protesters Convicted on Terrorism Charges for Wearing All Black
The government won on most of the charges against the anti-ICE protesters, including terror counts and conspiracy to moving a box of antifa zines.
"In a significant victory for the government, jurors convicted eight defendants on material support for terrorism charges for wearing black clothes to the late-night demonstration. That use of 'black bloc' clothing was an antifa tactic that assisted in the shooting of the officer, prosecutors said"

I think part of the reason everything feels so weird is that we’re in an enforced cultural stasis because capital doesn’t want to invest the cash required for novelty and change

Yeah, it feels like we've run into this capitalism coffin corner where 'actually building shit that matters' is a less attractive investment than 'everything as a service rentseeking' so nothing actually happens.

I’m going to go ahead and say this spells the end of the Washington Post. If Dems want another issue to run on, they should make this sort of pricing illegal.

[Tragically, the larger oil tankers are frequently more than twice the height of most known Godzillas (in length).
Only Godzilla Earth (anime), at roughly 300 m tall, seems likely to be able to carry large oil tankers.
BUT - GE might need to move them one at a time
AND - GE lives in the far future]

The feature that I miss most from you-know-where:
"Search [the posts of] people that I follow".
I'm sure it's non-trivial to implement, but it creates some fantastic benefits in terms of the site's utility (or however that concept would be phrased in cooler buzzwords).
Cheers.

this feels like a surprisingly nice win? like how often does a company just take the ai out, let alone admit that the ai sucked and it's better without it?

Everybody's Fly: A Life of Art, Music, and Changing the Culture
A Life of Art, Music, and Changing the Culture
FAB 5 FREDDY may not be the household name he once was, but this autobiography should change that. Come for the inside stories of graffiti, rap, hip-hop, and MTV, but you’ll stay for the reminiscences of late-20th century Black New York. A MINUS

"It’s some ancient magic…grounded in these handmade crafts. People say
Well, it must be quicker
No
It must be saving money
No
You must need less people
No! The only reason is because it helps the story…helps push the chars in a new direction"
