of “Alien,” and the best I can manage is:
a) the mystique / lack of understanding of the creatures in the first “Alien” feels more essential to its cosmic horror roots. More can be lost from overexposure.
b) again, these movies just kinda tend to work better. 🤷🏻♂️
7. Excepting “The Predator,” it impresses me how successful this series is, and how the most recent three carry their own interests and attitude despite coming from the same brain trust. I tried to reflect on why the loss of mystique for the Predators bothers me less than the similar lore sprawl…
6. Plays as a sibling to “Prey,” with its hero another aggressive youth gunning for the maturation rite of hunting. Midthunder’s society was less toxic, but in both cases the heroes deal with the ol issue of what I think I want / what I actually need. (It’s an old dynamic because it fucking works.)
Okay, seven things:
1. Trachtenberg and Aison are a great storytelling team. When it comes to the fundamentals of classical narrative in genre, they are REALLY hard to beat atm. (OK, the character beats are maybe a LITTLE too underlined in a scene with Thia’s sister.)
