This photo of the head of Village Preservation standing in front of a surface parking lot that is part of a historic district really just tells you everything you ever needed to know about how preservation is going in NYC

NYC Council Speaker Julie Menin says on WNYC this morning that there are "certain blocks that have over-saturation" of outdoor dining structures, and that she will meet with community groups next week to address those concerns.

You probably don't know what SEQRA is - but you should know that it's slowing down the housing that we need. Deputy Mayor Leila Bozorg is here to explain why reforming it is key to cutting red tape and building more housing.

i think powell's response here is a demonstration of the folly of the idea that democratic accountability requires presidential control. what if the president is not acting in the public interest? you want independent agencies to be able to push back and pursue their *congressional mandate*

Hochul and Mamdani to Announce Road Map to Expand Child Care

The goal of the multiyear plan, which Ms. Hochul is expected to introduce alongside the mayor in an appearance Thursday morning and will be a part of her State of the State address on Jan. 13, would be to offer universal access to children statewide, her office said.

Bluesky community! This is my official NYC mayor account. I’ll be posting updates on what’s happening at City Hall and how we’re delivering for New Yorkers. It’s great to be here.

Happy New Year! We love sharing these pro-book posters from the Works Projects Administration Poster Collection in the Library's Prints and Photographs Division. Of the 2,000 WPA posters known to exist, the Library of Congress's collection of more than 900 is the largest.

"N.Y.C. Casino Bids Promise an Economic Boom. The Reality Might Differ.

As the number of gambling houses has grown across the United States, they are no longer the tourism magnets that they used to be, experts say."

I would still read the postmortem as to why all the people terrified of Zohran Mamdani decided to unite behind the most odious and disliked disgraced candidate running and not a total normie like Brad Lander. Mamdani wasn't inevitable, and hitching that wagon to Andrew Cuomo was a huge mistake.

ah, perhaps instead of pumping millions into endless factional infighting Dem donors could invest in making local Dem organizations genuine civic spaces that can reach people during and between elections

Mayor Adams’ legacy? Look to the future of affordable housing in NYC. Adams achieved zoning and housing reforms that could help future mayors address New York City’s affordable housing shortage.

Mayor Adams notably took office without a sweeping policy goal that could leave a permanent imprint on NYC

Yet, he’ll leave office having achieved a lasting legacy when it comes to housing and zoning

Will his reforms make NYC more affordable?

Short explanation of what the deal is with "affordability" in the housing ballot proposals, since people have lots of questions - mainly stemming from the fact that our existing system is so complicated to begin with! (Explanation first, some personal commentary after)

Affordable Housing’s Slow-Motion Financial Collapse Nonprofit groups say swelling operating costs exceed the rent they collect for more than one in five of their apartments, housing some of the city’s most vulnerable tenants.

Affordable housing providers are sounding the alarm, with some of the city's most vulnerable tenants at risk.

The Ballot Question That May Matter More Than the Mayoral Race Voters have the chance to eliminate one of the central obstacles to New York’s housing crisis.

Great piece from @errollouis.bsky.social about how important a yes vote on ballot questions 2, 3, 4, 5 is to NYC’s ability to take on our affordability crisis.

You’ll see obfuscation and name-calling, but no solutions from those who say the current system is just fine.

Cuomo, talking to conservative radio host Sid Rosenberg this morning:

"God forbid, another 9/11β€”can you imagine Mamdani in the seat?" Cuomo asks.

"He'd be cheering," Rosenberg says.

Cuomo paused and chuckled before saying: "That's another problem."

As you see the Ellisons’ use the husk of Paramount/CBS to hand out fiefdoms to conservatives, remember: This summer Paramount bribed Trump $16m at the cost of 60 Minutes’ integrity. FCC approval of the Ellisons’ takeover bid followed within a few days. Brendan Carr made this statement at the time.

Before: SACK, RAGGI, AND BIANCO, Circuit Judges.
Plaintiffs-Appellants brought pre-enforcement Second Amendment
challenges to certain aspects of New York State’s (β€œNew York” or the β€œState”)
concealed carry license regime. As relevant to this appeal, Plaintiffs challenge the
constitutionality of: (1) the prohibition on carrying firearms in β€œsensitive
locations”—namely, Times Square, the New York City (the β€œCity”) subway
system, and the Metro-North rail system, see N.Y. Penal Law §§ 265.01-e(2)(t),

requirement that a State concealed carry license holder apply for and receive a
City-specific permit in order to carry a firearm in the City, see id. Β§ 400.00(6).
Plaintiffs filed a motion to preliminarily enjoin the enforcement of those
provisions, which the district court denied in a March 13, 2023 order. On this
appeal from that order, we conclude that Plaintiffs are unlikely to succeed on the
merits because, based on the preliminary record before us, the government has
demonstrated that each of the challenged provisions falls within our Nation’s
historical tradition of gun regulations and, thus, does not violate the S

The 2nd Circuit upholds several New York gun restrictions, including a ban on public carry, gun-free "sensitive places" (including Times Square and the subway), and a special permit for city carrying. It holds that none violate the Second Amendment. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...
