just listened to T.A.P.O.A.F.O.M. *insane* album, just some real good mood music with meat to its bones and unending vicarious bass face
i do notice that i get a bit oversaturated with funk after 8-10 tracks - that album is long, so it'll be the only one i listened to today. i adored it, though!!

funkadelic's "maggot brain", today! i'd heard + loved the opener a while ago and was curious about the full album.
sadly, this one's my least favorite of the lot. liked 2 tracks, was ambivalent about the rest and outright disliked the closer. makes me sad, because i can hear how influential it is.
next album i was given to check out was "the velvet rope" by janet jackson.
i think this has it - the sauce i want out of an album i'll revisit in future!
i'm noticing the hip hop influence and it's hitting right! intriguing thematics in the lyrics as well. my favorite one so far!

stevie wonder's "innervisions" is next! way easier on the ears, doesn't shy away from earnest and direct portrayals of life as a marginalized musician in NYC.
great dynamics on this album, and i mean - what could i say about stevie wonder's voice that hasn't been said? the man's incredible.
first album was donny hathaway's "live" album. it had the common flaws live recordings have (very bass-heavy) which made it a bit fatiguing on the ears after a bit - but i found myself liking it a lot by the end.
the 12 minute live version of "the ghetto" especially owned. started the whole thing!
my pal @boundo.bsky.social is getting me into RnB/soul. it's a nice change of pace - forcing me to let my guard down as a listener a bit.
harshness or abrasion in the music is rare; just relax and let the music move you, and note the lyrics! it's hard to accept when you're coming from noise rock...

some of the music of phil elverum (the microphones, mount eerie) has that vibe! it's strongly connected to the planet earth and nature, and takes some black metal influence into it. not sure if his voice is the kind of thing you're looking for, but it'd be worth a try!
