“The tourism industry is standing on the back of these natural resources. If you don’t invest in it, the pressures on these resources will make that legacy crumble.”

Oregon Wild is proud to be part of a campaign taking measures to protect our rivers. The River Democracy Act would safeguard over 3,200 miles of waterways, from the big landscapes of Northeastern Oregon to the rugged Coast Range.

“Our nation’s rivers are vital to everything we as a country depend,” said John Zablocki, director of river protection for American Rivers. “The good news is that communities across the country are taking measures across the partisan divide to protect their rivers.”
You can't separate the health of the environment and the health of the economy. Unless of course you're only considering short-term gain..
"For businesses like mine, this is about long-term stability. When wildlife populations and habitats are healthy, rural communities benefit. That’s the economic argument, but there’s also the fact that it’s just the right thing to do."

Read this op-ed from Oregon Wild staffer on how the misleading "Fix Our Forests Act" will take us one step closer to removing the 'public' from "public lands"
"Now, a new threat has crawled out of the DC swamp: the so-called “Fix Our Forests Act.” It recently passed the Senate Agriculture Committee, and a similar bill has already cleared the House. This legislation does not sell off public lands, but it attacks the very idea of what makes them public."

Check out 1percent4wildlife.org to learn more about how you can help prevent damage from invasive species. Let's invest a little now, so we don't have to pay A LOT down the road.
BUT WAIT. The story isn't over, and we do have a chance to turn the tide. Oregon has an invasive species council to handle things like this before they get out of control. But they need funding, and we've got a solution coming up in the Oregon legislative short session... 1% for Wildlife.
Let's head back to the Willamette today. Two individuals have been found so far. Only two? Not millions? What's the scare about? Well... a single female can carry 250,000–1,000,000 eggs at a time.
In just the fall of 1998, over 1 million mitten crabs were collected in south part of the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta. Let's take a minute to imagine how much that would cost, from labor, to tools, to the cost to repair the damage.

The damage was significant enough that they are now illegal to own or sell in Oregon.
