After a slow start, work is piling up! Thankfully I have my eggs in many baskets, but I feel terrible for those affected by the US funding freeze, editors, academics and others alike. I hope some things are resolved soon!

Yes, usually in early January, to clients who worked with me in 2024, to wish them a happy new year and thank them for working with me. This usually leads to them responding saying oh, yes, I have work for you, although that's not actually my intention! 😂 #ACESChat

A10: It's mostly recovering from jet lag (we're now in LA, so it's a 9h time difference with Kraków). Jet lag with a toddler is... not a walk in the park. But he goes back to daycare fairly quickly (with extra naps there if needed) so I plan to take it easy for a few days and take naps. #ACESChat
A9: I let them know in advance that rates are going up per January 1 and offer them the opportunity to book me at the old rate in the first months of the new year. #ACESChat
A8: Not every single year, but I aim to increase my rates by half a cent per word every two to three years. #ACESChat
A7c: I have a small Notes file with about three subheadings: outstanding invoices, invoices to be created, current jobs and their deadlines and upcoming jobs. I don't do spreadsheets or anything like that. I can't read them. But one look at this note file and I know how available I am #ACESChat
Yup! The overbooking still happens to me sometimes as well! But I've definitely gotten better at saying 'No' over the years. #ACESChat
A7b: My husband also travels a lot for work, and we travel a lot as a family (i.e.: no daycare), so we try to plan and juggle everything as far in advance as possible. We also plan solo trips for me. So if a client contacts me I usually have a reliable idea of how available I am. #ACESChat
A7a: I know from now how many words I can realistically edit per day, and everything is based on that. I've gotten faster over the years for sure. I have a toddler now so we have year-round daycare, but with the illnesses I think he was home 50% of the time the first year! It's better now. #ACESChat
A6: Frankly, none 😂 I keep track of income/expenses via Zoho, but that's about it. There's subscriptions to pay, membership fees, conference travel and registration costs, accountant fees... but my expenses are not sky high so I just pay them as they come up. #ACESChat

A4: Another goal is conference planning, but being located where I am at the moment (Poland), only one conference is feasible: the @the-ciep.bsky.social's September conference (date and location not confirmed yet, but it'll be in the UK for sure). #ACESChat
A4: I suppose looking back at last year's income and deciding whether that was good enough or whether more is needed is a place to start. I also like to see how much I am getting from each (type of) client. It helps me learn which kinds of clients to focus on in the new year. #ACESChat
