anyhoo i am djing a lot this week and if you’re in chicago you should probably come see it

sometimes i get mad at the dumb shit i see on the tl. then i remember it’s my page and i can block & move on! amazing!

listening thru the hemlock back catalogue today and it’s rly striking how forward this music feels. HEK001 by untold was released in 2008(!) and still sounds fresher than a lot of tunes coming out now!!! the “post dubstep” era of UK dance music was truly ridiculously fertile

caveats here are that i am not using a lot of intelligent playlists in rekordbox (yet) - from what i have heard these are MUCH more dependent on transfer rate to be able to populate quickly, once i’m doing this i’ll likely switch to SD cards with a faster transfer rate

the important thing that pioneer’s documentation does not call out as clearly is transfer rate for USB storage devices - again ymmv but i’m consistently able to play 3-4 decks of simultaneous tracks from a single 420mb/s drive and have never run into tracks not loading or taking a long time to load

pretty much all gear you run into will like:

fat32 formatting for any drive

aiff files at 16/24bit (32bit support is iffy for some players you run into, ymmv there)

44.1k sample rate (anything above this can freak out some lower tier current gen or older pioneer players)

the amount of false information about file formatting and operational standards for dj gear that gets spewed around the internet is unreal!!!! it’s all in the manufacturers documentation! like imagine doing any other job that requires use of specialized equipment and not reading the manual first?

my least favorite dj trend is videos of playing 4 decks of (usually faux hardrgroove) tracks that sound exactly the same and doing random fader jacking

feeling a sense of joie de vivre that’s eluded me for years

to be ultra clear - no shade for doing this, definitely makes me feel freer to just use drum presets so i can focus on what i like doing in the studio instead (weirdo modular soundscapes)
