I hope mine will do better ;)
Might be unlikely, but at least ill be in good company: concord, ashes of creation, crucible⦠and now highguard.
Great writeup @gwbycer.bsky.social!

I like it. It made me stop scrolling.
Its unique, readability is good and it arranges all options in a playful manner. Great game UI!
Huh - yellow suit? Kill bill vibes!
I miss the Katana ;)
The portal effect somewhat reminds me of POE2 ascension trials. Like it!
The fog effect is on spot! Subtle - but noticable without distracting.
The left one's great! I like the semi grumpy look :D

Tuned my creature placement animation.
First boring.
Then snappy.
Now snappy and impactful.
Quite happy with the result.

Mockery forces enemies to hit your taunt. Meanwhile your Vultureblade sits on a flanking position picking off their weakest unit. Positioning games within positioning games.
Genuine question for auto-battler fans: how important is lore to you? Do you care WHY you're placing creatures on a board or is the gameplay enough on its own?
Which sounds more fun?
A) Sync PvP -- both players live
B) Async PvP -- play at your own time again a real board, just not live
OLS has both. But which one would you actually play more?
Balatro proved a card game with weird mechanics can find a massive audience. That gives me hope every single day.
What's the weirdest game mechanic that actually hooked you?
What's the ideal match length for an auto-battler? Reply with a number in minutes. I've got playtest data but I want to see if it matches what you actually want.
I wanted a fantasy world that felt genuinely alien. Not "Earth but with magic." Not "Tolkien but darker." Something where you look at a creature and think "what IS that."
What game world felt the most genuinely strange to you?
What's more satisfying?
A) One massive creature destroying everything
B) A full board of synergizing units working together
Wrong answers only.
Storybook Brawl was the best auto-battler ever made and its shutdown left a hole in the genre. I'm not trying to copy it. I'm trying to fill that same feeling of "my choices actually matter."
What did SBB do that no other auto-battler has matched?
I keep a "bad ideas" document. 47 pages. Highlights include: "creatures that evolve based on real-world weather" and "a faction that only works on Tuesdays."
What's the worst game idea you've ever had? I need to feel better about mine.
Today's solo dev schedule:
- Morning: fix matchmaking bug
- Afternoon: design new creature
- Evening: answer Discord messages
- Night: wonder if I should've just made a platformer
What does your dev day look like?
Creatures in OLS have two upgrade tiers. Not just stat bumps - actual ability changes. Splitspawn Blob starts summoning 2/1 Bloblings on death. Fully upgraded? It summons copies of itself.
Same creature, completely different threat. What's the wildest unit evolution you've seen in a game?
