Something along the lines of them not being able to dull the pain of combat otherwise. Humans are squishy and the magical girls aren't really much less squishy, the soul gems just mask that some. I sorta headcanon that early on they didn't have the gems and it was a problem, by his answers. (2/2)

Kyubey only really tells one or two lies that aren't by omission in the show, so it's fairly safe to assume that without them humanity's progress really would be a lot slower.

As for the souls thing, it'd make them less capable of fighting supposedly? 1/2
