I LOVE this tense scene on Murderbot, where lives quite literally depend on its ability to make small talk… really brings home how terrifying small talk is for some of us. πŸ˜…

As someone who mostly reads horror, I'll never understand the vitriol towards "cozy" books. People say they are escapist, unserious, allowing readers to avoid big issues. And I'm like, girl, WHEN did your dark romance book fix society? Did I BLINK and miss your detective thriller solving crime?

Two photos. In the first, deep in a conifer forest a man in winter clothes holds a reindeer and sprays something from an aerosol can on the antlers.

The second photo is of a small town street in the dead of night. Little shops and dim street lights. A deer stands in the middle of the road. It's barely visible, just a feint silhouette. But, its eyes and antlers glow like something ancient and supernatural.

To prevent deer from being hit by cars Finland has tried using reflective paint. (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/avoid-deer-strikes-finland-painting-deer-antlers-reflective-paint-180949792/)

How to Triumph Like a Girl I like the lady horses best, how they make it all look easy, like running 40 miles per hour is as fun as taking a nap, or grass.

I’m just going to leave this here; I keep losing it. And it’s my favourite.

I dislike the idea of flash as just a shorter, short story beholden to all the rules & constraints of short stories. In that case, it becomes a trick of compression alone, a hurried up, stunted short story that caters to declining attention spans. If you write flash, is that what you're aiming for?

Start a big dumb project that's going to go nowhere. It's fun. It's pointless. It's like gambling with free lottery tickets. Any of this shit you just make up could become a bestseller. Give into the literary hysteria in 2025.

Reading The Little Stranger, Sarah Waters.
Nothing’s really β€œhappening” in the traditional sense of the word, events are gently meandering along. Characters are neither likeable nor unlikeable, and not driving the story. It’s not strongly emotive; closer to quietly unsettling. And yet…

I'm prone to writing on the move and needing to sync everything. So I just cannot get past that it's not iCloud compatible. I've tried with Dropbox but I loath it. Truly. (Or it loathes me maybe?)
I love the sections in Scrivener though, you're right. They're amazing for hopping about

I've always been attached to Pages for the actual typing out of the words bit, but does everyone else find it super clunky for manuscripts (or is it a skills issue with just me)?

Any #writingcommunity folks recommend their favourite planning or writing platforms (preferably iCloud-compatible) ??? Scrivener and I are having another fight.

The first β€œworking” day of 2025 and our wifi has borked. Completely dead. Bereft of life. It rests in peace. It has run down the curtain and joined the choir invisible. It is ex-wifi!
And I am not taking this as an omen of the year to come.
