The Ash Wednesday procession through the Chicago suburb of Melrose Park from Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church - honoring immigrants, immigration detainees and those killed by ICE & Border Patrol - has begun.
Chicago Archbishop and Cardinal Blase Cupich is near the head of the march.
Behind the column of clergy, IL Sen. Dick Durbin and IL Rep. Chuy García have joined the procession.
The main body of the procession is being led by a banner that reads "God's love knows no borders / El amor de Dios no conoce fronteras."
It's very quiet. There's prayers, no protest chants.
It's quite dark as well, aside from the police lights where their vehicles have blocked cross streets off.
Processioners carry candles and signs adorned with quotes from the Bible and the Pope.
Some, not all, join in the prayers echoing from the front of the column.
The procession has returned to the church; Fr. Fossá concludes the event alongside Archbishop Cupich by telling attendees, "may this be the mark of our Lenten journey."
