I had to get three of my teeth removed -- two of which were wisdom teeth. I was in such excruciating pain with the wisdom tooth, the soreness from getting them removed is like a 1 on a scale of 50.

Pencil sketched attempt at a 45ish angled head. It's bad.
Drawing with references I don't do terribly bad, but trying to draw blind -- especially not front facing perspectives -- is a current weakness (as evident by my wild boy pictures here).
I've decided to start trying to learn how to draw stylized faces on sketch paper because I'm totally not supposed to be working on a game dev project in my spare time... drawing is hard when you don't know what you're doing, though. Such is everything, I guess.
I tried to play Animal Crossing about a month ago and despite the nostalgia, it is difficult to get back into the original... I really want to try out this mod, though. ๐ฌ
Using JetBrains Rider with Godot was pretty nice, but I have to say it's a lot nicer to just be able to open Godot and be ready to go within a few seconds instead of waiting for over a minute for Rider to boot up too.
I'm currently working on an inventory system for my project and trying to get as much done as I can today since I'm back to work tomorrow after a week hiatus. I've enjoyed my time away from the daily grind... I just wish I could do game dev full-time and not have to worry about working retail. ๐
I always felt that trying to figure out mechanics from some of your favorite games and recreating them to be the best way to learn how to make stuff. You don't have to worry about coming up with a full fledged idea while learning how games are made, and you'll probably come up with something easier.
What engine are you planning on using and what kind of games do you want to make? Those two questions will help to find communities for you.
Happy New Year!
While everyone else is coming up with different resolutions, I'm still going to be flying by the seat of my pants in this chaotic soup we call life.
Though, I do wanna save up at least $15,000 this year. And publish a game. AND make it to 2027 a better person than I started 2026.
That's what I'm thinking! Some of the best music, movies, books, etc are depressing and games aren't any different!
Instead of working on an inventory system for my project, I decided to add a very crudely functioning ball you can kick around the room.
This is likely the end of my productivity as I'll likely be stuck kicking this ball around instead of working on anything else. ๐

I thought up a game idea while walking the dog, so after I came back inside I told my significant other the idea and asked what she thought of it. Apparently my idea was depressing, so I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing. ๐ซ

Here's a video of tonight's progress. I'm not 100% satisfied with the way text & icon are shown above the items. I'm also confused about my player's movement at the end -- I might have to divert and try to figure the movement issue next, or should I just continue adding features?

I feel your pain. I've been "in the scene" for 21 years now and have but one roughly thrown together game released in 2009/2010 to show for it. So many projects started, but nothing to really show for it but endlessly rewritten prototypes.
Be excited with whatever sticks and make your dream!
I tend to get very distracted during longer sessions and my perfectionism often causes more problems than good, so this is has helped me tremendously with staying focused and planning ahead instead of getting caught in a loop of haphazardly rewriting and abstracting all of my game's functionality.
I've been breaking up my game dev into spurts: this morning I added a check to see if you're facing an object to interact with it, and tonight I will add a UI element to show what you're interacting with. It might be a slow process, but it's keeping me productive and consistent.

I think this is why I always stall when working on projects. As much as I love learning and implementing new and complex features that will benefit the project later on, I never get to a point where I have a functioning and fun prototype and makes me want to continue working on it.
I'm reaching the point where I try to make everything "perfect" instead of working on the core idea of my project... which, there is no true idea at the moment, but is it necessary to complicate it with an advanced FSM when I barely have any actions for the player to do yet?

A screenshot of the Godot Engine editor showing a 3D scene. A simple white capsule character stands on a flat white plane next to a grey rectangular pillar. The scene tree on the left highlights a "Player" node and "CSG" shapes. A version control panel is visible on the right.
A screenshot of the JetBrains Rider IDE showing GDScript code for a Godot 4 project. The script, main.gd, contains a _ready() function that dynamically loads and instantiates a 3D scene from a file path. The file system sidebar on the left shows a project structure with folders for characters, camera logic, and levels.
A progress update for my current "idealess" Godot project. I have a somewhat working scene loader, a 3D player controller and third-person camera implemented. I'm using JetBrains Rider for coding as well, though I'm still not sure it's a necessary addition to my workflow.

I'm back on making a third person controller camera and controller -- something I've done about 3 times in the past two years now. ๐ซ
And as per usual, I'm struggling. ๐คฃ Camera rotations are hard, at least for me.
That's kinda where I'm at right now, though I unfortunately don't get a lot of time to work on projects. I'm currently working on different systems and project structure in hopes it'll spark something up in this brain of mine. ๐
I've pretty much been in a stagnant game development hell since 2009, starting projects to never finish since releasing my first game. I have many ideas, but scope creep makes me feel like I need to start elsewhere. Currently I'm working structure & systems hoping it'll turn into something as I go.
Well I guess GitHub is down, so version control ain't on the menu just yet for this project since I can't download the Godot Git Plugin... ๐คทโโ๏ธ
Time to figure something else out.
I listen to so many game dev videos on the way home from work that it has gotten me so off the course of what I want to make that I don't even know what to do when I open Godot...
I've got a lot of projects and ideas... do I go with one of those or come up with something else? ๐ญ

A photo of a black HP Victus gaming laptop. The screen displays a colorful desktop wallpaper inspired by "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild," featuring a character on horseback looking toward a distant mountain peak. The keyboard is backlit with a soft white glow, and a TV is visible in the background.
I finally opened up the laptop and figured out the issue with it: a tiny rolled piece of plastic was stuck underneath one of the fans, causing it to get stuck and not spin which created loud noises. It is fixed, and now I can finally get back into some game development!
I AM EXCITED!

A wall-mounted television displaying the video game The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The screen shows the three Guardian Stones standing near a river with mountains in the background. The TV is set inside an alcove framed by rustic wooden beams, which are decorated with a green garland and colored holiday lights.
Guess what game I just restarted for the 17th time while waiting for the new one to release! ๐ญ
We recently moved into an old shop that isn't fully converted to a full fledged living space yet. I did get internet ran out here and we do have heat, but no hot water, shower, or anything of that nature. It's nice to be here, though -- it's just sooner than I wanted to be out here.
Vivid red aurora visible in the night sky.
Tonight's aurora borealis over northern Indiana has been spectacular. These past couple of years have been amazing for sky watching between the comets and auroras.
Here soon, I might actually be able to resurrect my old desktop... if that's the case, game dev and MAYBE YouTube or Twitch is back on the menu for me. ๐
I can't deny I'm actually pretty excited at the prospects. I'm tired of having all these ideas and no outlet.
