WW2 Bombing in the UK - A very powerful painting - A House Collapsing on Two Firemen Shoe Lane, London, EC4 by Leonard Rosoman, 1940

Leonard Rosoman served with the Auxiliary Fire Service and captured this disastrous moment as a wall collapses on two firemen. One of the firemen was killed - a fact which haunted Rosoman for the rest of his life.

Iโ€™m mortified that I forgot this book from @brianlaslie.bsky.social. An outstanding book. Covers the air war in all its iterations. #histbookchat.

I'm not trying to paint anything. I am just pointing out some facts that you apparently do not like. The fact that they could eliminate the whole bunch of these murderous theocrats is great, but IDNF that this means they are doing better at eliminating specific combat assets.

I meant the opposite sorry for lack of clarity. Shooting up vessels of states you arenโ€™t at war with is piracy.

Does the question on whether this is actually a war or not make a difference, legally? Starting with whether there was a declaration.

The laws of armed conflict are reasonably clear on the restrictions on a national warship firing on a national warship of an opposing combatant that is not carrying ammunition for its main armament.

Namely: there arenโ€™t any.

There isnโ€™t any requirement for immediate threat or anything similar.

Operation Spring Awakening/Lake Balaton Defensive Operation YouTube video by Tank Archives

Operation Spring Awakening began #OTD in 1945. After three failed attempts to relieve the besieged garrison of Budapest, the German and Hungarian armies launched a massive offensive aimed at eliminating the 3rd Ukrainian Front and a stabilizing the front line. #history #WW2 #WWII

Hey ChatGPT, write me a fictional paper: these LLMs are willing to commit academic fraud Mainstream chatbots presented varying levels of resistance to deliberate requests for fabrication, study finds.

Why tenured academics and administrators insist that using this technology is unproblematic and just how the future should work with none of our input is baffling to me. Feels like a modern cargo cult.

Italian Navy Historical Branch - SNR Does the Italian Navy have an historical branch and does anybody have a contact for them? I am particularly interested in a vessel called Ardito and would like to see her war diary for March 1943. Chr...

RTp (Regia Torpediniera - Escort Destroyer/Sloop) Ardito was a Ciclone class torpedo boat, an enlarged and improved version of the Spica class, which was the mainstay of the Italian escort fleet. She would almost certaily have carried active sonar and more powerful German depth charge equipment.

Torpedoing of M/N Nino Bixio, 17 August 1942 Background While this is not related to CRUSADER, as a public service below is the translation from Aldo Cocchiaโ€™s memoirย Convogli (Convoys)[1]. Thanks to Lorenzoย Colombo for providing the teโ€ฆ

It was most likely on 6 March 1943 that RTp Ardito depth-charged HM/Sub Turbulent, which was lost with all hands on patrol. She has not been found.

In August 1942 Turbulent attacked and damaged Italian merchant Nino Bixio on its northbound run. Bixio was carrying 3,200 POW, of whom 336 were killed.

OTD in 1944 the Red Air Force carpet bombed Narva, then Red Army used artillery to finish the job. As a deliberate act, hundreds of civilians died & thousands were made refugees. We then repopulated it with Russians.

Imagine something like this happening in the 21st century.

Yeah, salaries have to be pretty decent before it all makes sense. Once you have kids/family anyway. I think of it as Luxembourg with more sand and sun. Maybe a fun place when you're unattached and in your 20s, not so much with a family.

A classic black-and-white photograph of Geraldyn โ€œJerrieโ€ Cobb, pioneering American aviator and astronaut candidate, seated in the cockpit of a high-performance jet aircraft during the early 1960s. She wears a flight helmet with visor, oxygen mask connected to a hose, and flight suit with patches. Her expression is calm, focused, and determined as she looks upward slightly toward the sky, evoking her role as the first woman to pass the same astronaut screening tests as NASA's Mercury Seven men and her status as the top contender in the Mercury 13 program. The image captures her courage, skill, and groundbreaking ambition in an era when women were excluded from spaceflight due to gender bias.

Jerrie Cobb should have been the first woman in #space. ๐Ÿš€

Due to gender bias, she wasn't.

Part of the Mercury 13 (women), she passed the same tests as the Mercury Seven astronauts (men), often ranking in the top 2% (including compared to the men). She was born #OTD in 1931.
