A reminder to all, if you have a commentary on the NZ research system that is based in verifiable fact (i.e. not back room conversations/rumours) the New Zealand Science Review is a great place for it to be recorded for posterity. It needn't be long, but we need to record the 'now' for the future.

Salt it either at least 45 min or less than 3 min before cooking (both sides), cook on a medium heat flipping frequently to brown it evenly, use a meat thermometer and take it off the heat when it reaches 60C internally, then let it rest for 5-10 min before eating.
Another 86 (!) scientists gone. These were voluntary redundancies, but very hard to not assume it's because they find it hard to see a future for their work in the current AoNZ science system.
people wiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiildly underestimate how much research cannot be done on a computer. like yeah you can use the computer for the data analysis but you do in fact have to do the other bit (data gathering) first. hammer, nails, etc

Good article, but the framing is wrong. There is not a dearth of interest in taxonomy. There is a scarcity of funding and positions, which is a deliberate choice by funding agencies and institutions. The youth love taxonomy! It's the olds that are failing to meet their passion!

Pretty accurate picture for what it's like for a lot of our science graduates these days, unfortunately - people may be realistic about not getting jobs in precisely their area of specialisation but they can't even get anything vaguely related

We're probably getting pretty close to 700 science jobs lost over this term of government, directly linked to reforms/cuts. And believe me: the country wasn't overflowing with them to start with.

Apropros of nothing, updated Wellington south coast water sampling results (through Sunday) are available for people to look at and consider themselves whether this represents a concerning pattern or not. NB: a result of <4 means coliforms were undetectable with the testing method used.
