One of the people killed by Soldier F was a man who stepped out to help another of his victims as he lay dying in the street. He waved a white handkerchief as he did so. Soldier F shot him in the head. His name was Barney McGuigan and today his family had to listen to a judge acquit his killer.

🇺🇦1,328 Ukrainians are being relocated in the weeks up to Christmas. I spoke to one group of 30, including children, retirees, and one woman who is immobile in her legs after a stroke, who don’t know where they will go next after 2 years in Leitrim, listen back to Drivetime www.rte.ie/radio/radio1...
Yes! Another count is underway there just starting now after John McGuinness’s surplus votes saw no one elected - David Fitzgerald of FG is out, they think multiple will be elected when the next count comes in, and that not all the elected TDs will reach the quota in the end
One elected in Carlow-Kilkenny with a flurry of elections expected in the next few counts - its a guessing game where the Soc Dem transfers will go with 2 Fianna Fáil, 2 Fine Gael, and 2 Sinn Fein left in the hunt #GE24 (meanwhile everyone’s holding up well)
And it’s Fianna Fáil’s John McGuinness who takes the first seat - finally - in Carlow-Kilkenny #GE24
FF is on course to take three seats in Carlow-Kilkenny with John McGuinness set to be elected in the next count coming up shortly, FG's Michael Doyle is gone, there's two Sinn Féin, one Soc Dem, and one FG in last place still in the running #GE24
Oh! Yes of course, orders taken!
It's a tight pack after that - transfers from the Green Party's Malcolm Noonan have put Patricia Stephenson of the Social Democrats in at seventh place with 5,802 votes, while Fine Gael's David Fitzgerald and Michael Doyle are in next with 5,585 and 5,329 respectfully.
Currently at fifth is Áine Gladney Knox from Sinn Féin with 7,185, followed by her running mate Natasha Newsome Drennan who is on 6,297.
It's a tight race for the remaining four seats, with Fianna Fáil's Jennifer Murnane O'Connor on 8,533, Peter 'Chap' Cleere, also with the party, on 7,753, followed by Catherine Callaghan of Fine Gael in at fourth place on 7,264.
Aontú candidate Gary O'Neill has been excluded from the Carlow-Kilkenny election on the ninth count, no one has been elected, but Fianna Fáíl incumbent John McGuinness is now just 564 votes away from reaching the quota - which is 11,627 votes.
SO 🧵 - no one has been elected in Carlow-Kilkenny yet, and there's a general delirium setting in, but things are about to get exciting, with Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Sinn Féin, and outsider Patricia Stephenson of the Social Democrats all with a chance at a seat - here's the state of play:
Independent candidate Luke O'Connor, who ran on a 'net zero immigration' platform, has been eliminated in Carlow-Kilkenny. The fifth count has seen the Social Democrats Patricia Stephenson put into contention for the last seat. No one elected yet!
People have gone down the pub in Carlow-Kilkenny with plans to return as we are now being told 8.15 pm for a first count - no one's expected to be elected until at least the next mind you! 🕙
First count in Carlow-Kilkenny expected for 7pm, counters are busy at work as we speak, with some nervous candidates waiting it out...
Three FF candidates at the top of the pool. #CarlowKilkenny rarely fails to disappoint. #GE24 At least the bottom feeders were shown the door conclusively, some light.
In Carlow-Kilkenny... it's looking like it's going to be a long one. This is with 79.2% of the votes tallied, count centre staff not expecting anyone to be elected in the initial counts, and one person has said 'we've been sent to hell'
I’m in Carlow-Kilkenny reporting for Radio 1 on the results as they come. 20 candidates are vying for 5 seats. FF is hoping to take 3, FG want 2, SF hoping to take a seat after Kathleen Function’s success in 2020, but GP’s Malcolm Noonan will be fighting to hold onto his seat 🗳️🗳️
I love an Irish General election. You can keep Jake Tapper striding through a VR map like a Colossus. I don't want Wolf Blitzer using a touchscreen to show voter turnout.
Give me a frazzled RTE reporter coming live from a playschool in Offaly watching votes being added with a pencil for two weeks.
I appreciate Roger Doyle using the blurb on his debut record to take subtle shots at Bono and his manager
