Emergency alarm message
Lots of noise at WiPSCE as we all got an alarm test on our phones - a new conference nightmare to navigate #wipsce2026

Day 1 of WiPSCE was epic. Lots of interesting talks, and we finished the day in the Infosphere lab tinkering with physical computing devices #Wipsce2026
I know I've unlocked a new level of academia now I've just sent my first ever "just a gentle reminder" email for an event this afternoon.

π― New open access paper: What do school websites signal about computing and who it is for? Using document data (n = 960), we examine how schools frame computer science in public-facing materials, and what that might mean for gendered participation.

Ah that sounds like a lot to juggle! If I can do anything to help like sharing relevant papers or reading something through, let me know
Thank you! How are things? Are your studies going well?
The WiPSCE program is out and it just got very real that in March, I will be presenting my first published work from my PhD!

Any recommendations for new computing education or CSEd research accounts to follow following the latest exodus from the dark side?
New blog: I've written about what postgraduate study is like through the lens of metaphors, from my own experiences of being on a quest, to conceptual metaphor theory and how metaphors can shape and transform our thinking.

A Christmas tree outside the University of Glasgow
Been to see the Christmas lights at uni. There are graduations happening here today - it's very inspiring to think that one day that will be me!

I'm very much enjoying a daily research integrity pause for thought with this excellent advent calendar!
Twitter accounts are based in Russia. BlueSky accounts are based in homes with, frankly, too many books, plants, obsolete cables, and pieces of rustic pottery, that could do with a bit of a tidying up, to be honest.
Absolutely delighted to have my first piece of work from my PhD studies accepted as a full paper for WiPSCE 2026! π
Oh my goodness! That looks like an English level of "shut everything" snow, but a Canadian on of "oh but it's mere flakes"!
Collaboration in an international research team isnβt just about exchanging drafts. Itβs about mutual learning, respect, and generosity.
My new blog explores what that looks like in practice.

How to scare a researcher!
I have recently updated my "Time Management and Study Skills For Students" resource. It comes with slides for teaching and activities for students. Feel free to browse and use: sway.cloud.microsoft/BysO9ChOrHMQ...

I'm already fed up of articles that talk about GenAI tools "writing" code. GenAI tools generate code based on predictive models. The art of writing (code) includes processes such as refining, testing and evaluating.
#RoadsignforResearch What research can feel like at times - slow. What writing can feel like. It can be frustrating at times but research and writing take time. You are not a slow writer. It just takes time to produce high quality writing.

Our last #CSEdRStudent Network online meeting before the summer break will be all about analogies and metaphors! We'll take a playful and creative look at how to describe the doctoral journey. Join us online on Thursday 17th July from 6pm - 7pm - DM @nicolalooker.bsky.social or me for the link.
All set for the first talk at the LHI Expo, and it's @rpcerc.bsky.social up first!
Got it with my first guess, nice clue!
Today I am reminded of the benefits of a ten-minute walk, feeling the warmth of the sun and the power of the wind on my face.
