It’s a new month and a time for cleaning.

Started spring cleaning today by cleaning up unneeded subscriptions. Cleaned up ~2% of my monthly net income.

Fourth place finish in a WPT event tonight.

In Super Mario RPG, all character animations in the overworld are controlled by the game's internal scripting language. For example, Geno is controlled by a script that places him at different coordinates in the inner Forest Maze depending on if the player has followed the correct path or not thus far. For playable characters, there are two ways to load them into a level: in this instance, Geno is a hardcoded, standalone NPC.

The other way to animate a playable character is to target a recruited party member directly. For example, this is used when you encounter Johnny for the first time and your two active allies come out to confront him with you. Almost all of the time, the former method will be used instead of this one. This method is only used in a few exceptions.

There's one other notable exception: At the beginning of the game, when Mario plays charades to explain to the Chancellor what happened to Toadstool, instead of loading her as a standalone NPC into the room, she is temporarily added to the party so that the game can apply her animations to the character in slot 2. This means, technically, Toadstool is the first ally to join the party, not Mallow.
