Jazmine Ulloa — El Paso: Five Families and One Hundred Years of Blood, Migration, Race, and Memory - with Jia Lynn Yang & Hamed Aleaziz — at Conn Ave
From New York Times reporter Jazmine Ulloa, a sweeping human history of El Paso, revealing violence, power, and privilege at play in America's most famous border town.El Paso has been called the “Ellis Island” of America’s southern border, a mountain pass cum border town cum bifurcated metropolis where past meets future, and disadvantage meets opportunity, or so the promise goesEl Paso is an extraordinary, can’t-look-away reported history; it uses deep research and dozens of new interviews to blow away the myth of this place, where Mexico’s Juarez and America’s El Paso intertwine. It charts the history of El Paso through five families. From the Mexican Revolution and the Mexican Repatriation, to the shifting immigration laws under Reagan and Trump and the violence and bloodshed brought on by the drug war, El Paso captures a place often misunderstood or forgotten by the rest of the country, and the world.El Paso is a brave new work of narrative nonfiction that gives new voice and perspective to history that has long been checked at the border, or told through the lens of white men alone. Ulloa draws upon meticulous research and reporting and stunning historical detail to craft the intimate narratives of an unforgettable cast of characters.
It’s here! Join me, Jia Lynn Yang + @haleaziz.bsky.social at Politics and Prose TODAY to discuss El Paso and it what this city had to teach us about our nation’s border and immigration battles today. See you at 7 pm at 5015 Connecticut Avenue NW. politics-prose.com/jazmine-ullo...

So incredibly proud of my dear friend @jazmineulloa.bsky.social's ambitious and beautifully woven new book that traces the complex and rich history of El Paso through the lives of five families, elevating the border city to its "rightful position" at the center of our American story. Inside a Bizarre Case of (Alleged) Judicial Impersonation in Dallas
In Texas, an opaque system undermines accountability for judges.
Pitcher extensively covered complaints against this judge- now presumed DA elect. Many members of the #Dallas bar expressed concern- including about the time this judge had a staffer impersonate her on Zoom. @texasobserver.org www.texasobserver.org/who-judges-t... @michellepitcher.bsky.social

Sanctioned Judge Upsets Incumbent in Dallas District Attorney Race
Amber Givens beat out two-term DA John Creuzot in Tuesday’s primary, sending shockwaves through the local political and courthouse scene.
New from @michellepitcher.bsky.social: Last week, former Dallas County District Judge Amber Givens was fighting her sanctions for judicial misconduct before the Texas Supreme Court. Today, she’s the presumptive Democratic nominee and likely next district attorney for one of Texas’ biggest counties.

This is the Talarico (green)/Crockett map alongside the Bernie/Biden map.
Obviously Talarico picked up a bunch more rural counties than Sanders here, but you can see the Austin/San Antonio/Valley/El Paso vs. Houston/Dallas/East Texas split still

Seems to me Paxton would just lose either way, & either on May 27 or earlier Cornyn would just drop the adoring Trump shtick & just be the Cornyn of the past 24 years. If pressed on any flip-flopping, he would just say well you do what you need to do in a primary, his white hair glowing senatorially

Trump Is Expected to Endorse Cornyn
Republican strategists hope the endorsement will make the Texas Senate race less expensive and less competitive.
The looming, unsexy variable all along has been that the GOP would just get its shit together and nominate Cornyn.
It doesn't end the race, but if you were banking on the Talarico-Abbott voter, that's probably a Cornyn voter.

Also, though less importantly now, this primary was truly an annoying time to live online.
Also a smattering of downballot Dem stuff at the bottom there

To Lead Blue Backlash, Texas Dems Turn to Austin
November's liberal army will be helmed by James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa, after the capital city and Latino-majority areas propelled the former to victory over Jasmine Crockett.
My quick take.
Talarico's margin of victory is basically his margin in the Austin area; at the same time, his map calls to mind Bernie Sanders' in 2020--specifically his strength in majority-Latino areas, which I've long felt represented a lost chance: www.texasobserver.org/lead-blue-ba...

In Battle for Shriveled Soul of GOP, Congressman and YouTuber Will Face Off Again (Again)
A repeat Republican runoff sure to degrade all who participate in it, or even think of it, might create a long-shot opening for Texas Dems.
This one raises the bleak prospect that Herrera, a professional gun fanatic & gun-rights extremist, could come to represent Uvalde, home to the worst school shooting in state history. Of course, there is another major political party in Texas, at least in theory www.texasobserver.org/shriveled-so...

Travis County is in: Huge Talarico lead.
In my state House district: Montserrat Garibay followed by Kathie Tovo (runoff). (In neighboring HD, Samantha Lopez-Resendez might win outright.)
For personal friends I may have on here: Brigid Shea at 61%; Andrew Hairston down about 2-1

Statistically speaking, incumbents lose runoffs.
But Paxton has unique weaknesses and we will have X number of weeks/months of both desperately seeking the magic Trump endorsement...
