We noticed something interesting (and frustrating) this winter because we had a number of cold spells here in Florida - when humidity drops, the food in our cages loses moisture and therefore weight, artificially increasing our food consumption measures. Curious if anyone else has noticed this?

Federal funding for US biomedical research is moribund.
Since October 1 2025, NIH is -80% in new grants and -70% in values (total dollars).
Labs are closing down and researchers are leaving science.
To what end?

Middle of the night sincerity post, one little pocket of grief that bubbled up today: our NSF program sincerely did bring a lot of early career people into what has historically been a pretty unwelcoming space, and Iβm sad for them, but Iβm realizing Iβm also sad for me? I loved doing that.

A lot of people, including me, were wondering how an IRB could ever approve this study.
The answer is that no IRB did. The person who βsigned offβ on approval from the only ethics board that reviewed it had resigned three years earlier. His signature was used without his knowledge.

An ICE agent shot and killed Ruben Ray Martinez, a US citizen and San Antonio resident, in March 2025. Then ICE and the Texas Department of Public Safety covered it up. He was 23 years old. I am calling for a full investigation into this shooting, including why there was an 8-month cover up.

Trump Official Who Helped Kill USAID Now Using Its Funds for Himself
Russ Vought, White House Office of Management and Budget director, has decided what is happening with USAID funds.
And an underrated villain, Trump's Director of OMB, slashed funding from programs that kept millions of people alive around the world so he could spend that money on something more important -- himself

Gladys Mae West obituary: mathematician who pioneered GPS technology
She made key contributions to US cold-war science despite facing huge barriers as a Black woman.
No joke: I got angry hate mail today for writing an obituary of a Black woman scientistβbecause the person felt she did didnβt deserve the recognition.

Google to pay $68 million over allegations its voice assistant eavesdropped on users
Class-action lawsuit alleged that Google's voice assistant illegally recorded and shared private conversations with advertisers.
Do you remember when people were saying "I think my phone is listening to me, i'm getting ads for stuff I spoke about" and people said "They arent listening to you, they're just this good at predicting your interests"?
Well, it happens they were doing exactly that.

Hereβs the deal with the FY26 NIH funding bill:
One line in the 1000+ pg bill = significantly less science.
The increase to ~40% of grants moving to MYF is estimated to result in a 35% decrease in the NUMBER of NIH grants funded annuallyβmoving the paylines from 10% to around 4%.
THIS IS BAD.
