Ooh, pro wrestling discourse, too? What a wonderful day to be on Bsky! Anyway, coming soon: the main event of the summer.

The asymmetry of the value placed on human life is so striking. Israel has a goal to recover 40-year-old remains; to do so, it invades a sovereign country, and the lives of 26 Lebanese are an afterthought. Their names not even worth printing in the New York Times.

Marsupials previously thought extinct for millennia discovered in New Guinea The chances of finding one mammal species thought to be lost was β€˜almost zero’ and finding two is β€˜unprecedented’, biologist Tim Flannery says

"Two charismatic marsupial species that had been thought extinct for 6,000 years are alive in rainforest in remote West Papua."

Oh yeah this is super cool as both the pygmy long-fingered possum and ring-tailed glider were previously only known from fossils 🀯πŸ§ͺπŸ€

There is HEAVY pressure on Dems to get in line on this Iran war powers vote.

Leadership is whipping a yes vote, progressive groups are threatening primary challenges, and I’m told Pelosi is currently giving Landsman a piece of her mind on the floor.

Good. Every Democrat who doesn't do the bare minimum should obviously be obliterated at the next opportunity in their primaries. Glad leadership is whipping yes.

Folks will be - legitimately - furious with the Ds that voted no (leadership whipped hard for yes), but I think it is worth looking on the other hand: 98% of House Democrats (and 1% of House Republicans) just voted to try to block the president from waging war on Iran.

Iran! The Great Evil!

I’ve spent years, decades, obsessing over the Bush Administration’s Iraq WMD lies, writing about them, debunking them.

I can think of no lie about Iraq WMDs told by Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld et al that comes even close to the enormity and absurdity of this lie from Donald Trump.

A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, it’s not a publishing problem, it’s a men problem.

The reality of an actual diplomatic process, with extended talks in Geneva or Vienna or Muscat and god forbid a five-page memo from the Iranians, was so daunting to the Trump administration (probably because they have fired or let go every seasoned diplomat) that they started a regional war instead.

Really can't be left unacknowledged that every single state in the region that houses US military personnel, except for maybe two, do so against the will of the supermajority of their own public's opinion but it does not matter because most of these states are US backed dictatorships.

Once upon a time, I worked in "enhanced due diligence" where I would have to tell the most nerdy quants in the world to google search how absurdly corrupt certain places and people were and why it was a terrible idea to underwrite a derivative from a loan to them the way they would in Switzerland.

The Nihilism of Trump’s War Games - Truthdig At home and abroad, demonstrating strength through punishment is more important than β€œvictory.”

The point of Trump wars is the war. There are plans for condos, but no peace. He preens, extorts what he can, and loses interest, assuming he began with any. What's left is a killer opportunity with no excuse left for it but civilizational extremism that ends either in futility or war crime.

you have until March 23rd to comment.

i know we have endless fucking things to scream at politicians about--this is an important one too.

Why are so many bases being successfully hit?

There should be no world in which we planned an attack in Iran, expecting counter strikes, and have had our defensive systems exhausted so rapidly?

We should have been stockpiled with enough patriot missiles to defend these things for weeks…

I mean part of the answer is they sincerely didn't think Iran would follow through, since the US leadership has demonstrated they do not comprehend their enemies as human with capacity for thought, but also things never work the way you *imagine* them to. Even unlimited stockpile wouldn't be 100%.

Israel's systematic attempts to kill the entire Iranian opposition leadership in Iran is indicative of what (some) of us have been sayingβ€” Israel doesn't not want to turn the IRI into a democratic republican state, it wants there to be no state. It wants a rubble-state, Gaza or Yemen or worse.

it's possible that a majority of the senate would vote for striking iran, but it's not guaranteed; the *reason* senate republicans don't want to reclaim their constitutional responsibility is because they do not want to have to go on record in favor of a war that even republican voters don't want
