Known as Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), this abuse takes many forms and has significant physical, psychological, and social consequences. Girls with disabilities are at increased risk due to societal attitudes, low digital literacy, and dependence on caregivers and technology. Explore the SVRI resources to see how you can support these women and girls. https://www.svri.org/tfgbv-affecting-women-with-disabilities/
Day 9 #16DaysOfActivism #16DaysOfActivism2025 #InternationalDayOfPersonswithDisabilities
Professionals need to understand that digital records should not just be viewed as neutral records. Abusers can manipulate them to construct a version of reality that masks coercion, and these simulated communications can both perpetuate and eclipse actual experiences of abuse.
Effective training for professionals needs to go beyond checking for explicit threats or aggression, by developing their learning to understand and recognise the patterns of coercive control and post-separation abuse.
The technology enables perpetrators to overwrite lived reality with simulations. The survivor’s ongoing experience of coercion, patterned, contextual, cumulative, becomes harder to see, while the perpetrator’s digital performance becomes much easier to believe.
This isn’t just about the image abusers create, though. Perpetrators have harnessed tech in numerous ways to further abuse victim-survivors. Woodlock describes this tech-enabled abuse as abuse that is ‘spaceless’ - it has no boundaries.
