Every person who’s ever voted understands voting for the lesser evil. This is just how voters talk during a primary. I also hate Gavin Newsom, and would never vote for him - right up to the day when he’s (god forbid) on the ballot, and then I’ll do what I have to. This talk is not a threat to Dems.
It’s an excuse for trying to foster healthy debate about primary candidates while reducing infighting, which is my goal here. We don’t want “blue no matter who” - that’s for the general election, NOT the primary. If we don’t have space to talk about candidates this way, we can’t really debate them.
You’re right - it’s not rational. Unfortunately primaries aren’t rational. The whole party is supposed to make ideological commitments to candidates they like, and then most of the party has to set them aside for someone else. It’s an inherent logical conflict. “I hate Obama! … I love Obama!”
If it helps here’s amother way to think about it:
Newsom is a terrible candidate. He’s alienated the Dem base by being close friends with right-wing bigots like Charlie Kirk, and he’s an anti-trans bigot himself.
If he’s nominated, it won’t matter if you or I don’t vote for him. He’ll lose anyway.
But that’s how criticism of candidates sounds! It’s how criticism of candidates ALWAYS sounds. Do you not understand that “I would never vote for that guy” is the only real criticism a voter can make?
The ONLY impact of scolding people for that now is- we lose votes later.
