Evolving our suburbs requires more than just adding housing; it requires integrating the amenities that people need in their daily lives.

The more people that choose to walk, bike and ride public transit to get around cities, the better cities work for everyone, including drivers.

EVERYONE.

There’s no β€œwar on cars,” just an opportunity for more successful cities.

You’re being lied to. It’s time we tell #TheTruthAboutTraffic.

Ya the 1-car household is the captive audience in waiting at whatever stage of life but I’d focus on households with older kids, kids 16-18 that want to have a life, job, etc but can’t have one unless there’s 2+ vehicles. But what do I know about how the world works, I’m an urban elite

OrlΓ©ans has at least two private indoor pools so that kids can get basic swimming lessons. It is not cricket vs pools. It is extremely low taxes vs expanding / maintaining city facilities. #OttPoli

Does this not seem familiar to you? I’ve been raising this issue since taking office. Halifax’s current peril is Ottawa’s future threat. Looks like it’s time to continue talking about Urban3.

The high cost of low taxes Councillors need to put our money where their mouth is.

And council just keeps making the same bad decisions year over year because no one wants to be the one to tell their constituents that they need to start paying their fair share. They've been subsidized for so long the fair share is now fucking huge. Which of course it is, that's what scams are.

The suburbs are a Ponzi scheme Examining the roots of Halifax Regional Municipality’s upcoming budget crisis.

On top of that, the city's underlying financial model is not sustainable. In theory the city provides services to residents and recoups the costs for those services through taxes. But in reality large parts of the city cost more money to service than they bring in, in taxes

Yeah, cool, so a short 🧡 about Halifax's finances.

Right now, after 14 or so year of taxes Halifax is at the precipice of a debt crisis which has the genuine potential to be destabilizing to our government. Most likely reforms instead of revolution but destabilizing none the less.

Why now?

Thinking about putting together a detailed station by station breakdown of what was planned, what was promised and what we got once the LRT hits completion and everything thaws/melts.

Coffee Shops – Taking the Village Test – PartΒ 1 Village Test Methodology +Village Test Methodology Coffee shops are a great third place for work, social connection, or a quick break. This type of place can be known by all kinds of names: cafΓ©, coffee house, espresso bar, teahouse. They honestly don't even have to serve coffee. Anywhere you can pick up a drink and a treat or light meal fits the bill here, something like a smoothie bar would also qualify in my mind.

I think the report makes better argument for banning cars from the road entirely than it does for keeping RTOR.

"Drivers are speeding, aggressive, angry, distracted, and disobey traffic laws. If we try to stop them from running over people in this crosswalk, they'll just run them over in another!"

But here in Ottawa, whereas the original plan for the revitalized ByWard called for full pedestrianization of a key street, the β€œrefreshed” plan will only see pedestrianization on key dates like Canada Day. We lack boldness, vision, and even commitment to follow through on the original plan.

Ottawa's latest pedestrian fatality. We don't know the details. We know that this person has a family and community grieving a life cut short. We know that our city council and management have a road safety policy of accepting tragedy as inevitable. This tragedy is an outcome. Not an accident.

Keeping property taxes low is probably one of the least effective ways to make life more affordable for those who are most impacted by the high cost of living. The folks who benefit the most from low property tax increases are those with the most valuable properties.

28.02.2026 04:23 πŸ‘ 41 πŸ” 5 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 2

I’d love to see what proportion of households who swim in City pools, or rent City community rooms, or register for City summer camps - are those with household incomes lower than the average household income. I’ll bet they skew lower. 6/

28.02.2026 04:23 πŸ‘ 20 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And the Mayor suggests he’s kept the increases on taxes AND fees low. Not necessarily so. In many ways, increases to fees for services or programs have increased disproportionately higher. The significant spike in the solid waste fee is a shell game to keep that increase off of property tax. 4/

28.02.2026 04:23 πŸ‘ 21 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

Once again, the Mayor boasts about how low our taxes are - we’re not even keeping up with the rate of inflation. But this ideological obsession long pre-dates Sutcliffe. It’s a point of pride in Ottawa, a city with almost the highest median household income in Ontario. 1/

@transit.app I’ve been using the app for YEARS to commute, and set walking speed at my fast speed.

Tomorrow I’m taking the bus with my young kids, and was idly wondering how long it would take to get to the bus with them. I rediscovered that setting, so perfect!

Thanks, keep up the great work!
