Wild that for as long I can remember there’s been endless hand wringing from the American comics industry about its decline and what they can learn from Manga etc etc etc, meanwhile 2000AD just be out here sticking judge helmets on dinosaurs and balling

The YEAR OF EVIL asks: are villains what they used to be?
I'm heading back to the debut stories for iconic comic book villains to investigate how much of their original DNA remains in the modern version of the character... shelfdust.com/category/yea...

A small girl wearing a rabbit costume and blue coat carries a book as she walks to school.
Her mother (head out of shot) wheels her baby brother along in a pushchair.
The baby says "Peter Rabbit may be the 'Hero' of the story, but surely the obedient, widowed Mrs Rabbit is a more effective symbol of the oppression inherent within Mister McGregor's regime"
The girls looks furious and snaps "Mum!! He's critiquing my world book day costume from a marxist perspective again!"
A cartoon reminder that tomorrow is World Book Day (In the UK anyway). Originally for the @theguardian.com

It is! I’m happy to recommend bitesize bits if you’d like to try a more curated intro, or otherwise I’d recommend trying the “best of 2000 AD” books - each one is standalone, with a mix of modern and classic stories in them!

The cover for Scarlet Traces volume two
Scarlet Traces! What happened after War of the Worlds, when incredibly advanced aliens technology fell in battle…. and landed in the greedy hands of the British Empire?
Very bad things, as we’ll see when we continue this sci-fi stunner from Ian Edginton and D’Israeli >>>>

El Paso book cover front
El Paso book title page
Except from the NYT Books review of El Paso by Paul Begala
happy pub day to my incredibly talented wife @jazmineulloa.bsky.social, with her BRILLIANT new book about her hometown of El Paso, Texas, which she was inspired to write after she covered the deadly 2019 mass shooting carried out there by a white supremacist who opened fire at a wal-mart, killing 23

This volume adds Proteus Vex to the image seen across the spines of the series
That’s all of Scarlet Traces for now! These two volumes have every story in order — except for last year’s “Empire of Death”, which was a prequel.
When will the story continue? We’ll have to see. For now, this goes onto the shelf!

Ahron reveals that their spaceship can no longer return home, as the fuel is too low. They have to keep travelling to the outer side of the solar system in the hope they’ll find life before they die
The duo find evidence of life, and approach a council of the remaining planets, hoping to recruit them
Sat in a shuttle, the pair accept that destiny is now out of their hands and this could be their last journey together
And while she’s up to trouble, Ahron races across the Galaxy in an attempt to unite the remaining planets of the solar system and get them to join the war of the worlds.

The government approaches our heroine because she’s the last person known to have survived the surface of Mars. They attempt to persuade her to return to the planet to help the cause
Landing on the surface, she escapes an ambush and flees to a safe house
The next story brings back the heroine of the previous volume, who is now an old - but feisty - lady.
As the last person known to have survived the surface of Mars, the government asks her to return for the sake of queen and country

Earth realises the Martians are building a massive structure around the sun which will essentially turn it into a gigantic engine, powering them and destroying the rest of the solar system
An armada launches to take out the Martians
On Venus they discover a plot from the Martians to destroy the Solar System, and get caught in a race against time to try and get a message back to the other planets so they can fight back. This time round, the series has all the planets of the Solar System involved in the battle going on

The duo fly out to Venus in a flashy spaceship
On the surface; the pair are attacked by classic Martian robots from War of the Worlds, but with some upgrades
The duo head to Venus to find out what life is like under Martian rule, and to see if they can undermine the Martian conquerors and unsettle the colonist effort.
They find a lot of crazy stuff is going on over on Venus

Ahron , a Venusian living on Earth and working for the military, is confronted by a racist British soldier who uses various slurs against him
Ahron is recruited by the British secret service for a mission to Venus.
Most stories in Scarlet Traces leap forward in time and use different leads, and here we follow Ahron, a Venusian who lives on Earth. After Mars colonised Venus, the people living there fled to Earth - which led to racist conflict, as you’d expect.
But then Ahron is recruited for a secret mission
