I’ve found this fascinating, too! It seems like it’s reported quite a bit, but I’m not sure if there’s analysis beyond that just from a cursory search. If it’s his conscience, it’s certainly not bothering him enough to be circumspect in his actions…just apparently anxious in quiet moments.
KCNQ2 disorders are due to mutations on that gene, often de novo (not from parents). If a newborn is having seizures in the first days of life, once infectious causes are ruled out, it’s worth running a genetic panel, because diagnosis of KCNQ2 allows for early intervention and targeted medication.

This year, I am acknowledging the awareness week of a rare disease that I learned of only recently when it took on swift significance to my family. KCNQ2 disorders are among the most common cause of neonatal seizures. Variants can cause epilepsy and developmental delays ranging from mild to severe.

I haven’t been able to make it to Montgomery yet to see the memorial or the companion museum, but now that I have children, I’m hoping to go with them when they’re a little bit older.
As part of the law school clinic I participated in with EJI’s leadership, I got to be part of the research effort for this memorial. Truly one of the most heart-wrenching and eyeopening experience, reading article after article from not very long ago about countless instances of racial terror.
