evolved: open software for teaching evolutionary biology through virtual inquiries Januario et al., (2026). evolved: open software for teaching evolutionary biology through virtual inquiries. Journal of Open Source Education, 9(96), 300, https://doi.org/10.21105/jose.00300

If you teach evolution or use R in the classroom, we’d love feedback and contributions.

Please share if useful for your teaching or lab.

evolved comes with teaching vignettes β€”but instructors can easily build their own modules for their classes. We also have intros for using R in evol teaching contexts.

(Questions & Answer keys are available on request so AI doesn't get it so easily πŸ‘€)

All datasets are structured like real research data and work with standard R tools (e.g., #ape, #phytools, #diversitree).

Students aren’t learning toy examples β€” they’re learning transferable practices

Topics span across evolutionary biology:

🫘 Population genetics (selection, drift, Hardy–Weinberg)
πŸ¦• Paleobiology (diversity through time, fossil data)
🌳 Phylogenetics & macroevolution (birth–death models, tree simulation)
🧬 Molecular evolution

Our key design feature: two function levels

πŸ”Ή High-level β†’ fast, simple, analysis-focused
πŸ”Ή Low-level β†’ transparent, readable, modifiable (great for
learning how models actually work)

This supports everything from structured labs β†’ open inquiry projects.

Our goal: Let students do #science practices, not just hear about its theories

With #evolved, students can:
β€’ Simulate evolutionary processes
β€’ Analyze realistic datasets
β€’ Test hypotheses
β€’ Visualize results
β€’ Work with tools used by researchers

(3/11)

In my opinion, #evolution is inherently complex & data-driven: #fossils, #molecules, #phylogenies, #simulations...

But #teaching with real workflows is hard β€” setup time, data formatting, and #software complexity eat #class time. Well #evolved was built thinking about these barriers

Folks I want to introduce #evolved β€”our R package for teaching evolutionary biology through inquiry-based learning.

For undergrad + grad courses.
