The most popular parts of the comic can easily be read as a long-form joke about how elaborate fantasy worldbuilding is fucking stupid, which I can respect,

They had a bunch of the Alan Moore Lovecraft stuff at the second hand book shop today, but I didn’t buy them because I remember thinking they were kinda bad.

Getting really into Boston

A really funny trait to give a character in the present day would be for them to be really into bands like Styx, Journey, Asia etc.

You have been expelled from the Imperial cult. I am disappointed, and ashamed for you.

I think I might actually have to buy a book on women’s’ hairdressing or something, so I can figure out how to draw girl haircuts better. I need to understand the methods.

Met a guy who was taller than me the other day. It felt weird.

OP, she would not wear that. It’s not workplace appropriate attire.

(Beartato and Reginald, in a museum, gaze upon the Mona Lisa)

BEARTATO: There it is. The Mona Lisa. The most famous painting in history.
REGINALD: Wow! What's it do?

BEARTATO: It... what?
REGINALD: Why's it famous? What's it do?

(Beartato thinks.)

BEARTATO: I don't know.

REGINALD (to nearly museum employee): Excuse me! Sir? What's it do?

EMPLOYEE: You're the first person to ask! Watch this!

(The employee yanks a pull-string. Mona Lisa's eyes spin around and her mouth opens like a puppet)
MONA LISA: Honk honk! Honk honk!

(Everyone is delighted. This is true art.)

I can’t find a good example right now, but the art at the start of each chapter actually reminds me a lot of what was going on in British girls’ horror comics like Misty and Spellbound around approximately the same time!
