A neurobiotic sense curbs feeding: a new frontier in gut–brain communication Nature Reviews Gastroenterology & Hepatology, Published online: 02 October 2025; doi:10.1038/s41575-025-01126-zIn a new study by Liu and colleagues, researchers demonstrated a novel neuroepithelial circuit in colonic neuropod cells through which a molecular pattern from resident microorganisms was relayed to the brain — a ‘neurobiotic sense’ by which the host adjusted its feeding behaviour by monitoring a gut microbial pattern.

KEY POINTS
• Enterochromaffin (EC) cells release signaling molecules which can activate nearby sensory nerves.Whether this occurs via a conventional synapse for-mation is unknown.
• EC cells rarely make contact with sensory nerves inthe upper gut but this frequency increases in the distal colon.
• Neurite-like protrusiton on EC cells, named by some as “neuropods” are not a preferential site of contact with nerve fibres.

The gut-brain vagal axis governs mesolimbic dopamine dynamics and reward events Gut-brain vagal signals gate dopamine ensembles, reshaping reward and motivation beyond a brain-centric view.

"These findings challenge the traditional brain-centric view of reward processing, supporting a more integrated model in which vagus-mediated interoceptive signals intrinsically shape motivation and reinforcement."
