how it feels taking public transit rn
I mean Iβm not Amtrak so Iβm sure thereβs hurdles, but in places where we donβt need track upgrades (like the borealis) service can start in months, not years.
The temporary platforms should be employed way more! On track that can already take passenger trains at 79 mph (Class 4 iirc) using these should mean we can start service on new lines MUCH faster
Iβve realized I canβt hear the sirens from my new apartment in edgewater so thatβs fun
Kent Brockman, of the Simpsons sits in front of a green background with a small card saying, βTime to Panicβ
Itβs thunderstorms season in the Midwest so you know what that means for me!
Half the line to get into the building in portage park, the other half behind me was half a block long. Thereβs a yard sign in the lawn at the park that says βwe support portage park safe streetsβ
A kid holds a handmade sign on cardboard that says βbikers belong hereβ
Informative sign at the meeting highlights traffic safety stats in portage park: From 2020-2024, 247 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes in portage park including 55 children and older adults. 96% of crashes involving someone walking or biking caused injury or death. Tools to improve safety include mashing speeds and increasing awareness of vulnerable road users.
People are clustered talking to one another and looking at signs in the portage park senior center.
Big turnout at the Portage Park bike network meeting! I heard lots of support, so Iβm hopeful for safer, more connected streets π²
Ran into friends from many circles, which is so nice, love the #bikechi community
zine showing how side yard setbacks are bad news for trees.
this is incredible. lalali chan and @houseourneighbors.bsky.social produced a zine based on slides from a presentation i did on why setbacks make for terrible neighborhoods and cities with less space for trees.
it's perfect
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
The Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) must act NOW to design safe streets on Inner Lake Shore Drive and stop hundreds of preventable crashes, injuries, and deaths a year.

Like cmon we could be using big congestion zones to fund transit expansion, elevators in stations that donβt have it, and intercity and regional rail projects.
Thereβs no reason why every city shouldnβt have congestion pricing and put the money into a non-car related transportation bucket.
Or if I could just get that rolled into farecapping under NITA too thatβd be great
Taking Metra back instead of the red line and itβd be really nice if trips within the city were covered by my CTA monthly.
Modern, self-adjusting models (β AI) can be used to retrospectively determine what the success factors are.
This is far more meaningful than making false assumptions about the future.
So we were able to thoroughly investigate the importance of the bicycle for my last employer, a grocery chain.
Finally! This is a good spot, but maybe near more βLβ stations next.
calling housing "forced development" is misanthropic
"Unsatisfied with those plans, neighbors have released their own proposal for the site."
Oh, did the neighbors buy up the land itself and provide the capital to build their own plan? If not, why should they be able to tell the developers what to do?
"We certainly want to welcome them, but Galewood has reached our capacity at this point, and itβs a concern"
Northwest Side NIMBYs are at it again
A man in a suit imagines a world without lawyers. A bunch of people stand holding hands with rainbows and the sun smiling down on them.
+12.92% and we canβt get any more trains on the NCS
Report cover with illustration of a train and text βRAILROAD ELECTRIFICATION A Report to the Railroad Electrification Committee of Edison Electric Instituteβ
Fully support if it means we use it to pilot new Metra services again. Metraβs battery-powered FLIRTs should be through their paces for Union Station-OβHare service in 2028 and if we get serious Amtrakβs CHIP could be completed in time to thru-run CUS for direct McCormick Place-OβHare service by β32
The energy crisis of the 1970s was the last thing that made railroad executives take electrification seriously. Donβt let this one go to waste.
Have the bills been filed yet?
Iβm really hoping it passes it would be incredibly transformative for the region. NITA for housing basically
I wish it was easier to do. Transport fever 3 give us Interurbans and street running and my life is yours
Weβre still due one last big snow
Douglas Todd: Jarring 18-storey tower on leafy Vancouver street a sign of the out-of-scale times About 10 steel-and-glass highrises, much like the one proposed for Yukon and 14th, are set to arise among character homes within the Broadway plan zone. https://vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/douglas-todd-18-storey-tower-vancouver-out-scale-times
Douglas Todd: Hundreds of quiet east Vancouver side streets upzoned for six-storey apartment blocks Some residents in the vast Rupert and Renfrew area did not know their pleasant side streets had been upzoned for six- to eight-storey apartment blocks. It calls into question the city of Vancouver's murky "engagement strategy." https://vancouversun.com/opinion/columnists/douglas-todd-hundreds-of-quiet-east-vancouver-side-streets-upzoned-for-six-storey-apartment-blocks
'Monstrosities' or the evolution of housing? Multi-unit buildings on single-family lots gain traction in B.C. cities The number of multi-unit developments on single-family lots is increasing in B.C. neighbourhoods dominated by single-detached houses. Opinions vary over what these changes will mean for communities. https://vancouversun.com/news/local-news/multiplex-feature
Anakin/Padme meme I oppose this building because it's too tall It's just this building, not all new housing? You are not against all new housing, right?
A storey in four acts as captured by local news media:
18 storeys is too high, weβd be fine with 4-6 storeys
6 storeys are too big, we'd be fine with multiplexes
Multiplexes are monstrosities, we are fine with existing post-Second World War bungalows
...
Thatβs what Iβve heard from Metra employees when I asked, since as of right now every other off peak train terminates at grayslake.
Metra isnβt exactly known for their service pattern planning however.
