β€˜There’s no monitoring of earthquakes’: new British Columbia pipeline could spell catastrophe, experts warn Project on β€˜very poorly understood’ terrain and likely to pass through Rocky Mountain trench, which researchers say poses immense geological hazard

My take on why the proposed northern pipeline is incredibly risky without 1st doing some basic geological due diligence. BC’s N Coast & interior are criss-crossed with faults but seismic & geodetic monitoring is rudimentary and we simply don’t know what’s active.

Rare cloud makes waves above Victoria's Inner Harbour Rachelle Purych was looking out the window when she noticed a peculiar wave-shaped cloud formation outside.

We're used to seeing waves in the ocean...but waves in the clouds?

A rare cloud formation called Kevin-Helholtz clouds was visible over Victoria's Inner Harbour yesterday, and @seos-uvic.bsky.social professor Adam Monahan has the scientific explanation:

3/ Fraass and colleagues found that modern plankton communities emerged ~15 Mya after cooling stabilized. Fossil records show that ecological changes often happen before mass extinctions key knowledge for interpreting today’s ocean disruptions

2/ The K/Pg extinction (~66 Mya) wiped out ~90% of planktonic forams. It took 10 million years for their diversity to recover. Later events like the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum and global cooling at 34 Mya also reshaped ocean life in major ways
