I’ve been astonished by how normal it’s become for scientists to leverage shame and stigma when interacting with the public on hot button issues. And I mostly follow psychologists, who should really know better.

I’ve decided that the whisper network functions much more efficiently as a shouting network. Whispering protects the system and those in power. Shouting increases personal vulnerability but is the only viable path to actual change.

I can’t help but think how much farther along we would be in terms of scientific progress if the time, energy, and resources those networks put into obstructing women’s progress were instead put to any other purpose.
The biggest obstacle that I see is the collective adamant refusal to acknowledge the existence of the board.
I think any path to genuine progress — social, scientific, and otherwise — has to start there.
I suppose I just don’t see why an academic lab would need to do positioning/marketing or grow for the sake of growing.
I see those ideas repeated, but to me they represent a fundamental misunderstanding of the purpose of tenure, which is to free us from those kinds of external pressures.
I think one problem is the message that a lab is like a small business, when it really isn’t and doesn’t have to be. I write grants if I have an idea for a project. Students use existing data (there’s no shortage), or collect their own, or I take fewer students. It doesn’t have to be about $$.
It has come to my attention that I am being more of a jerk about this than is strictly necessary. Apologies — I’ve been increasingly frustrated by these systems for years, and it seems to have resulted in a bit of a tea kettle situation. I’ll work toward being less scalding in my delivery.

You should understand, that is what happened. The public learned to mistrust scientists and higher education because prominent scientists engaged in abuse, harassment, and coverup in public, then demanded that the witnesses mask their knowledge.
Shock of shocks, it was not great marketing.
And if academic men would consider not driving the entire higher educational system into the ground by firmly and publicly branding it as cult and exploitation playground instead of place of respect and learning, everyone’s tenure and grant budget would be much obliged.
As far as I can tell, I’m the only tenured woman willing to be loud about the Epstein files and harassment in academia, and seeing as how none of the men of academic bluesky have the balls or integrity to do it, I’m going to keep being that person I needed, and needed to see.

At least in academia, social media feels like a prison because it is. It’s a constant battle for basic epistemic respect that is only awarded upon demonstration of perfect navigation of and compliance with the systems that oppress us. Liking too many posts gets you docked points. Hence, crickets.
What I learned in this is that most male academics are either shitty or scared shitless.

Clinical science as a field has actively — and at varying levels, knowingly — fed into systemic and structural gaslighting for decades.
Why would academic gatekeepers — mostly middle aged and older white men — want us to believe that we’re imagining these abusive systems?
