Multiple vents opened inside HalemaΚ»umaΚ»u, creating giant fountains-some shooting over 300 m into the air-and an ash-and-gas plume towering over the crater. One of the webcams even got taken out by the heat.

We used 3D X-ray microtomography to unravel how vesicle textures and pore networks in volcanic clasts relate to eruption style and gas escape efficiency.
