I re-read all of them, in order from the first written, many years ago and loved it. Next, if you haven't yet, read Charles McCarry. And Geoffrey Household, if you can find any.

Neither Sheehy nor Gianforte was born or raised in Montana. If there is any relation between the men and the state they reside in, it is that they chose to live in a place where they can be fully self-actualized... modeling the "Yellowstone" archetype. It's a real thing, not exaggerating.
What's scary about this story is the surveillance it hints at. This trans woman had changed her name, legally, but chose not to change her gender marker. She was apparently flagged in the DMV system as trans and her license was invalidated under a law that supposedly only concerned gender markers.

Have had a monthly share for years. Hands down the freshest mail order service. Family operated fishing vessels (vs corporate.) Noticed a couple years ago that Mark Bittman orders his fish from Sitka too.
Firefighters are currently on the scene of a massive structure fire at a local landmark. The Salmon Volunteer Fire Department reports that the Baker County Market is completely engulfed in flames.
We were stunned by the response from Salmon. At least 15-20 various emergency vehicles passed us, from engines to water tankers, an all hands on deck situation. Am proud of our town's response, but feel sick for the Baker community.
Came up on it driving from Leadore when the fire was still in the back right of the store, before any emergency vehicles on scene. The flames were already 60+ ft stretching southward with the breeze. 1/2
Jennifer Jacobs @JenniferJJacobs SCOOP: The unexpected airspace closure in El Paso stemmed from disagreements over drone-related tests, sources told @CBSNews. Pentagon had undertaken extensive planning on use of military tech near Fort Bliss. Two sources identified the technology as a high-energy laser. Earlier this week, tech was used to shoot down what appeared to be foreign drones. The flying material turned out to be a party balloon, sources said. One balloon was shot down. FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford last night decided to close the airspace - without alerting White House, Pentagon or Homeland Security officials. Bedford told officials the airspace restrictions would be in place to ensure safety until issues with the War Department could be resolved. @camiloreports @olivialarinaldi @ellee watson and me: ...
The levels of incompetence from these people is so far beyond the pale that it becomes impossible to describe
Did the Pentagon really "allow" it, or was it one irrational incompetent at the Pentagon, because no rational adult would have allowed it. I can't help thinking this is all going to end very very badly.
Whoa, Fox reporting on C the weapon at Ft Bliss that caused the El Paso airport closure was being operated by CBP - DHS, *not* by the military
I almost never see your posts, hashtags or not, and I think I should. I usually have to go looking.
Bloomberg, Guardian, Atlantic, TNR, TAP, Bulwark, High Cty News, and a small handful of Substack/Patreon/Ghost/YouTube newletters/pods/videos
Thank you
Their choice of word betrays them--"girls," not young women. They are like the people who hear about the planning for these parties, hang out at the margins and look away when one of the "girls" looks overwhelmed or bewildered, hear stories afterward and tell themselves it was fine, no one was hurt.

Wildland firefighting as well. It's loonytunes; he's crazy. I bet Tim Sheehy is still awake right now.
Any loss of life in an emotionally charged situation is a tragedy. During the protests in Minneapolis, two individuals were shot and killed by federal law officers during separate confrontations in recent weeks. There are ongoing federal investigations into the deaths of both Renee Good and Alex Pretti, and I support full and impartial investigations into both circumstances. The families of the deceased, law-abiding citizens exercising their constitutional rights and the trust of the American people deserve a fair process.
Tom Homanβs deployment to Minnesota is a good move. States and cities should work with the Administration to arrest and deport these individuals instead of ratcheting up tension between residents and the federal government by encouraging people to illegally impede ICEβs efforts.
No surprise in today's letter from Crapo. While he expressed dismay about the two white shootings and acknowledges their rights, he still fully supports ICE funding, believes impartial investigations are underway (lol), and state/local govts are encouraging illegal impediments to authority (wtf).
The lawyer Raimund Pretzel pondering the Nazi co-ordination asked what happened to the 56% of Germans who voted against the Nazis but capitulated within weeks.
His conclusion was primarily fear, but also "the intoxication of unity, the magnetism of the masses." He also thought many joined in a "perverse act of revenge" against their leaders, who they believed had betrayed them by their weakness.
Reading Richard Evans "The Coming of the Third Reich" and reflecting on the vitriol directed at Schumer and Jeffries, at Harris in 2024, and many others in the Democratic Party.
To be clear, these current ICE details are modeled on Kyle Rittenhouse and his actions/ decisions/behavior. They are institutionalized roving bands of Rittenhouses, casually targeting whomever they choose, wielding violence, doling out death.
Graeme Le Saux commentating on #Arsenal - #MNU: "plaintive looks and bitten nails"
Effective, impactful, empowering... terms that have become pervasive, used to describe ideas/products/people as excellent in their class. In reality, these terms are nebulous, ambivalent, imprecise. I never believe anyone who uses this terminology to try to convince. It's usually a sales pitch.
Same... except relief from miserable Liverpool management. Have switched to La Liga and the Championship since NBC/Peacock have probably run me off permanently.
You may have heard that "social security is going to go bankrupt." Many younger people assume social security will not be there for them when they retire. In my latest paper I correct the record. SS is not going bankrupt but we'll need to revisit it soon π§΅

BREAKING: Hundreds of sensitive U.S. records obtained by WIRED undercut the Trump administrationβs claims portraying Venezuelaβs Tren de Aragua as a unified terrorist force invading the country. Intelligence agencies spent much of 2025 unsure TdA even functioned as an organization on U.S. soil.
Excellent and righteous diatribe from you at the beginning of your pod, while not ignoring the good interview and article. Needed to hear a man say this today. Men have been weirdly loathe to say much.
Tim's joke is actually spot on: it's a strict diet plan for losing weight. The calories and nutrient diversity in the suggested meal plans are inadequate for any growing person or working adult.
I've always wondered why morality is not a part of every conversation in this country, why it isn't raised more, and why so many shy away from it. I find many people hesitant about drawing a line, taking a stand. Maybe it's simply fear of judging in fear of being judged.
Ah, fully agree. He didn't say enough.
I agree it's who we are, but I'm curious. I love your writing and a very atmospheric storyteller. What story would you tell?
So he says he got a fresh bruise at some point that day. That's internal bleeding. He could have just as easily gotten a bruise tripping into his nightstand.
