How to Be a Filmmaker in the New Totalitarian United States “Be bold or go home.”

"It is not enough to 'adjust' or 'adapt' to our current reality, because that will only inevitably lead to defeat, or a further withering of power. Resistance, arguably, is more important for survival."

#1108 Did Canada Fund Putin's Propaganda? Or Censor Journalism? Russian propaganda or Canadian censorship? What happened when Russians at War came to TIFF?

"If this is Russian war propaganda, it’s the worst propaganda I have ever seen. The film is an astonishing document and, once I saw it, I knew my understanding of this story via Chrystia Freeland’s words, via the protests of Ukrainian-Canadian groups, was 100% wrong.” - Jesse Brown, Canadaland

Why Some Filmmakers Think Oscars Doc Voters Should ‘Suck It’ for Ignoring Celebrity Subjects Voters weigh in on why the most prominent and celebrity-focused documentaries on streamers like Netflix are not getting Oscar recognition.

Life, the Movie: Why Documentary Filmmaking Should Return to, You Know, Documenting Stuff | MZS | Roger Ebert If nonfiction films are determined to look, feel, and move like fiction, what’s the point of nonfiction filmmaking?

Good Saturday morning read for my docster friends. Don't agree with the premise, in full, but it's a thoughtful addition to the doc apocalypse discourse of past months. (also, "cinema-verité" and "direct cinema" are different forms...my pet peeve)

TVO was ready to defend controversial Russians at War film before pulling plug, documents show | CBC News Days before its board pulled support for a controversial documentary about Russia's war in Ukraine, TVO was ready to defend the film, documents obtained by CBC Toronto show.

I watched the documentary Russians at War recently. It's powerful, revelatory.

Deputy PM Chrystia Freeland hadn't seen a frame when she criticized public funding for it.

TVO clearly caved to totally inappropriate political pressure in pulling it.
