People forget or don't know this. Especially in start ups I suspect the code quality is better now. I know software that had core built that no one wants to touch as it was so bad, and it the reduces flexibility because of it.

Start with Fedora. Just try it from live boot USB. You should make sure all the hardware works anyway.
