It is Public Schools Week: Tell Your Representatives to Support Public Schools This Public Schools Week, make it clear to your representatives that you support REAL public schools, not privatized alternatives. Voucher programs, micro schools, online schools, homeschools, and the unchecked expansion of charter schools are now siphoning billions of public dollars away from the public schools that serve the vast majority of our children. These unaffordable programs divert critical funding to private, unaccountable institutions — often with little oversight, no requirement to serve students with disabilities, and no obligation to meet the same high standards we hold public schools to. Every dollar that leaves a public school is a dollar taken from a classroom, a counselor, a music program, or a school nurse. The child leaves, but the stranded costs stay behind. Tell them to STAND UP for public schools and the nearly 50 million children who attend them.
