(Also, aside, back to the first post in this thread: I really hate the analogy of DNA to computer code, because creationists love to misuse that analogy to argue for design. It’s an awful argument, but it seems compelling to folks who don’t understand the weakness of the analogy.)
There’s more to it than that, but this highlights the current state of the technology and why claims of consciousness are premature. Currently the most advanced LLM is nothing more than the old Dr. Sbaitso, just with exponentially more potential responses available to make it seem more “real.”
As to where that line is, between conscious and unconscious? I couldn’t even begin to guess. I’m certainly no expert in this field. But I’d say integrating new information is part of it. Show me an LLM that can learn to accurately consistently count letters in words and we’re (only) part way there.
Could software someday be conscious, or even sentient? Maybe. LLMs won’t. They’re only predictive autocomplete machines, ultimately the most complicated if-then we’ve seen. It’s why they’re often wrong. THEY DON’T THINK. They just assemble predictions based on what other people wrote previously.
That’s where analogies break down. LLMs are far more complicated than if-than, but fundamentally they are of the same class. No one would make the mistake of calling a simple if-then conscious. LLMs are just good at pretending they’re different, because they’ve been programmed to behave that way.
Consciousness is an emergent property of biology. It’s not a binary thing: bacteria are conscious in how they respond to their environment, but not sentient: they’re not aware that they’re aware. By that logic: is a simple “if/then”’statement conscious? I think few would argue that one is.
I think we’ve been badly served by using analogies where we compare brains to computers (and likewise DNA to code.) DNA is not a computer code. Brains are not computers. Consciousness is not analogous to software. The analogies can be useful, but they can lead to misunderstandings like this.

A really awful MS Paint drawing of various devices connected together. It is incomprehensible, but basically shows the PS4 controller being used as the audio output for the console, with the Elgato Chat Link Pro allowing that audio to be split between a headset and another device, such as a PC. A capture device is also being used to pipe the PS4's video output both to a PC for streaming and to a monitor for real-time viewing.

An Elgato "Chat Link Pro." It is a small audio device, one headset wire leading to a small rectangular box, which then has two other wires to send that signal elsewhere.
Looking to get one of these. Since I'm on console streaming through my PC, and PS4 won't do multiple audio outputs, I need this to be able to hear/chat thru my headset in game while also still sending audio to OBS for broadcast. I'll set up a separate PC mic for stream commentary/chat.
Been playing more Warzone, and I'm really starting to like it. It's got a very different feel, movement-wise, to PUBG or Fortnite. Spectating through to the ends of matches, it's almost like Apex in how important movement is.
I think I'll start streaming it soon, once I buy some audio equipment.
