(Functionally, they're part of a much older concept harkening back to MU* days. But storylets was the first formal definition of this and its effect that I first stumbled across.)

Caves of Qud has something that interactive fiction communities first coined as "storylets". Tiny hits of master-level fiction you just stumble into, which give little dopamine hits to the reader.

It's part of why small-scale writing matters. People will spend time reading the labels on everything.

i used to work in a coffee shop and sometimes i miss it a little bit. Despite the chaos and stress, it was nice to serve a fresh cup of coffee.

Folks that built their careers bitching about "cancel culture" are doing literal war because a thin-skinned asshole felt like it. That's the path that leads to.

Idk. I think a world where monsterfuckers who value consent, folks into weird and hard kinks that aren't for me, folks with identities and fursonas that I don't always understand, and the uncertainty and compassion that all requires, is vastly preferable to whatever the hell is going on right now.

Like, folks bristle at "hey join my Discord", and it's kind of an overwhelming model to be in 50 of them by comparison.

But what they're saying is, "please be a part of my smaller circle, I want to share stuff that isn't for general access". And that's always gonna be a thing.

This is why smaller spaces for people to build and grow end up being important, and why folks are correct to protect smaller spaces from becoming a "platform".

Discord is a bad model, but it's how it's being used now because it makes that easier. Whereas Bsky is on a trajectory towards Twitter 2.

Sort of the main thing here is that distinct communities need oxygen to survive.

Trying to smash all that into an everything app turns it into competing loudest voices in the room and makes it a shouting match. Which ceases to be community, really.

The invite only period of BlueSky really did feel like one big queer, trans, and furry block party. And it's why some of us did feel a bit defensive when the TwiX exodus started, and we saw peeps coming in declaring the site was 'finally alive'. It had pulsed to its own beat for over a year.

The one thing that the right understands correctly is that messaging is existential. I do not understand why this is unique to their ecosystem, because that isn't just a capability or purchased thing.

A friend explained to me that Warframe reuses textures in memory to do other maps and materials in the same scene. And it's part of why it fits so cheaply in memory that it can run on a phone.

Once you see it, you can't unsee it. It's fantastic work on their part.

Make art to see how it works, and how it feels.

Make computer (chip fab no, but small scale gate arrays and breadboards, yes).

Make science. Make food. Etc, etc.

Tbh: I think everyone should try to make the thing they want or commission once (if necessary, at small scale). And get involved in how stuff is made, and how it works in general.

It takes a lot of misunderstanding and uncertainty out of everything, and replaces it with genuine appreciation.
