Some of the confusion is no doubt caused by schools that hover around the edges of these definitions. My 2 lads went to Hutton Grammar School. No entry exam, although I guess it is selective as it’s a boys only school, originally a ‘Free Grammar School’ it’s effectively a comprehensive school.

Also some councils may consider 50dB to be an environmental noise nuisance between 11pm - 7am especially if persistent. So as long as you don’t have your heating on or need any hot water overnight then you’ll be fine.

I’d say that if you did install a combi boiler that output 50dB externally then planning permission is the least of your worries.
